So I’m curious. I printed my book overseas and am now selling my book via Amazon FBA. I didn’t do POD at all. I went into the local Barnes and noble and she seemed interested but said that after looking for my ISBN that my book was unavailable to order. So what is happening here??

Sounds like a lot of effort for little reward.

Hi MK - I am a first time Author and feel very confused and overwhelmed about the Barnes and Noble process. I am looking to literally upload my paperback book for sale to the public and need the book to be automatically connected to an online print on demand service that B&N automatically uses to print and ship to customer eg. Like KDP. Is this the service they provide or do I need to send physical copies to them first, have them placed in a warehouse and then they ship to customer please? Please do excuse my ignorance! This is all a first for me! I tried to reach out to their Customer service but found they didn't directly answer my question and was left even more confused. I live in Australia, so sending physical copies wouldn't be feasible at all for me, so I would absolutely need B&N to have a print on demand service directly linked for my online sales. Any light you can shed, would be greatly appreciated! Thank you kindly MK :)

I am in the process of getting my first book published and just set up an account with Ingram Spark, but paused when I got to the agreements section. My plan was to use Ingram Spark and KDP, but should I also use B&N Press if I am wanting to get onto their website and eventually in store or will Ingram Spark be able to sell books directly to them? What would you recommend? By the way your videos have been a life saver as someone brand new to self publishing trying to navigate all of the steps needed to get their book out there.

Is it redundant to publish through B&N Press and IngramSpark? If so, which is preferred?

My original publisher did a license deal with B&N for an economy hardcover; same book as the trade paperback only a HC at a cheaper price! Fine: the B&N brand economy HC SOLD OUT. COMPLETELY.

Fine; but here's the rub: if you do a print run and the book sells out, wouldn't you immediately reprint it and sell a bunch more? I would. But B&N, in its infinite (lack) of wisdom, did not. This was not SP and I had no control over B&N's business decision in this regard. But it just seemed weird to me that you would limit the profits from a money-making book!

So as Amazon wipes the floor with B&N, don't cry too much, since they have idiots in their marketing & sales publishing departments losing them money on books that sell.

Well, I’ve started writing, & my book is mainly poems & shorts about my life & the difficulty of dealing with abuse. Growing up with it, dealing with it, with good coping mechanisms & bad & what helped me survive my childhood growing up with abuse. I hope to reach the right audience someday.

@M.K. Williams, how do you sign up for Wholesale Discounts and Returns without getting Financially ruined?

I heard horrible stories about authors getting pallates of books on their doorsteps and $10-20k in debt because a local book shop fat fingered an order of 10,000 books, instead of 100?

Since no literary agent wants anything that I make, I'm forced to go into self-publishing, and even that isn't viable since I don't have the cash nor social presence.

Im currently only publishing through BN Press. You mentioned if they had to return the book to Ingram, but do you know how it works with just BN Press and campaigning for your book to be sold in a store? Is it more beneficial if I just stick with publishing with BN Press?

Went to my local B&N about putting the book on their shelf, they were all for it because I was a local author. Except now that it's almost approved to go on their catalog, I talked to them again and they said that: they don't do print on demand companies like ingram spark, and they won't set me up for a book signing ither.

Hello M.K. Thank you for your wonderful videos, I have learned a lot from you. I am about to publish my children's book through Ingram Spark and Barnes & Noble (Hardcover/same ISBN). Since I have heard people have had issues regarding publishing with these platforms at the same time I have a question about uploading my book. To avoid possible problems should I publish my book with Ingram spark, first?
Thank you again

Do you recommend only uploading to B&N with a book launches? Or if I already have a book out and add them to my places to publish, is that ok?

One day this would be a great dream! I like that you kept it real by saying you need to have a large enough following especially in your area. I moved to my city right before covid hit and on top of that I am extremely introverted so I don't know but a few people. I would bring no value to my local store. Do you have some strategies for how someone can start building a local community? (Especially in Covid times when people don't really want to get together.) I know this seems like something that should be intuitive but for someone like me it is not. But I'm really great at taking direction. Thank you for the video!
