Your next trip through VA you should come though Manassas. We've got some great old homes, a nice old town area and tins of historic sites.

Hi Joe; Yes I also watched Marlin Perkins animal
show. I really liked it when I was a kid. And they went to Africa
and it was so interesting. And thank you for letting us know
about him being from there. I learn so much from your travel videos.
Oh and in Joplin the "Barrow gang" was not suspected of being who they
were. The cops were totally unprepared. The suspicion was they were
bootleggers as the sign there says. So actually the cops went there initially
to ask the renters (the "Barrow gang") to stop being so noisy and also to find out
for sure what it was all about. It was sort of strange that Bonnie and Clyde being
there, the possibility never crossed their minds. Of course communication was a
lot less up to date back then.

Perkins and Jim...they were funny in retrospect. Jim risked dangers and Marlin alerted and warned us about how important it was to be cautious and alert when interacting with dangerous beast.

I grew up in Lees Summit, Missouri. Cole Younger the famous outlaw lived out the last 12 years of his life in Lees Summit as a preacher and is buried in the old Lees Summit cemetery. The town got its name from a doctor who lived there and practiced medicine in the Civil War by the name of Pleasant John Graves Lea. He was shot and killed in Lees Summit during the Civil War. There is a Pleasant Lee grade school in town named in his honor. He is buried in the Lees Summit Historical Cemetery. The town was named Lea Summit, but due to a misspelling by the railroad the name was shown as Lee's Summit.

Its crazy how these smaller towns were largely saved from the destruction of urban renewal due to lack of money. Joplin on the other hand, went absolutely crazy with bulldozing our downtown to make way for parking, which imo is what lends to a lot of ugliness i see in Joplin on a daily basis.

The smaller towns have all the traffic calming measures i wish Joplin had.

Jasper County has 2 county court houses. The one in Carthage and one in Joplin. Joplin was also the home of Dennis Weaver and Bob Cummings as well as Langston Hughes, the famous songwriter. You also forgot to mention that the famous outlaw, Bell Starr was born and raised in Carthage.

I was stationed in Joplin on canvassing duty for Army recruiting in 1974 and i can't remember where it is but you missed a scenic point. There was a building that had bullet pockmarks on the front from a battle between the Barrow gang and the police. Our office as weĺl as the Marines office was kitty corner from the Greyhound bus terminal back then, but that has been 49 years ago and things have really changed down there.

Joe and Nic,
Waco and Shiner, a fantastic combination.
That bridge reminds me of the Brooklyn Bridge, built
around 1882,
Of course no cattle or cowboys , but I'll gladly sell it to you:)
I really enjoyed this one, it's a change from those tiny impoverished places.

Cheers,
Rik Spector

I lived in Joplin for about a year then moved a few miles north to the little town of Oronogo. Bonnie and Clyde robbed the bank that once stood in the old downtown square. The James/ Younger gang robbed it before them. Lots of history in the area. Lots of old mine shafts under the entire region.

Just a note on health: Tilapia is a bad choice due the high levels of contaminants, such as, mercury, PCB’s and Dioxin! You will probably want to avoid this fish as well as Swai and Basa! I enjoy your travel videos. One other note, Marlin Perkins was the Director of the Famous St. Louis Zoo. As a preeminent Zoologist he accompanied Sir Edmond Hilary to Mount Everest , in search of the Yeti also known as the Abominable Snow man!😀👍
