You should let water stand on them over night and see if it soaks in.

Conditioning the pine isn't solely for evening tone, it's also to saturate knots.

You have to apply the stain at least within 2 hours after you pre stain. It evaporates after 2 hours.

Terrific demonstration, however I have to disagree on the oak board. Maybe it was the lighting for your view but on screen the treated side of the oak piece definitely looks better. Having seen this video I will pre treat all wood before staining.

What if I don't want any color on the wood and I just want to sand it and keep it to have its original color, what should I use for protection? can I just use olive oil instead of pre-stain? it is less chemical in that case!

You are a life saver! I sanded an old pine buffet with all the thick stain and shellac from years ago, and it's extremely soft. I was fearful to stain on the freshly sanded wood. This was great info. Thanks!

I purchased and had installed a patio door assembly. Aluminum clad on the exterior, the interior is unfinished pine. With all the small crevices, trim, and attached rubber seals it will be a challenge. Luckily I can take the sliding door out so that will make it somewhat easier. I'm on my way to purchase the pre-stain today. So glad I took the time to find your videos!

Great video. Newbie here. If I don’t plan to stain and just want to seal the natural wood, do I need to use wood conditioner prior to applying the sealer?

You might see a larger difference in the pine had you sanded away all the planer knife marks.

I'm surprised the conditioner didn't make the oak and pine stain much lighter. Pine being so porous I would have expected more difference than the others. I did see enough difference to use it on pine though. I very much appreciate your having done this video.

24 hours!? The idea is that you put on the pre stain so It fills up the thirstier parts of the wood, and while still pretty wet, you apply the stain so It absorbs more evenly because the thirsty wood had already had a big gulp of liquid. Waiting 24 hours makes this experiment pointless. The outcome should be incredibly dramatic.

Edit: never let ore-stain dry overnight or more than 2hrs.

I tried to use the prestain conditioner on my project , but ran into a couple of problems. What they don't tell you a bout this product is that if you use any wood filler that is supposed to be stainable , when you put the prestain on it seals the wood filler and won't let it take stain. You whined up with this ugly blonde spot in your stain and your project really sucks , especially if you use darker stain.

Really wanted to see this on oak but you let the conditioner dry over night. You have to apply the stain within two hours of applying the pre-stain.

I use the pre conditioner all the time for 3 years now. I can see the difference in all three. The color is lighter and more uniform in all 3. Not as noticeable in oak like the other 2 but definitely can be seen. Less splotching like you said. Makes a more beautiful finish. Just finishing up restaining my antique kitchen table which has a lot of birds eye in the top as well as the base. Ready to put the polycrylic on it in a few days if i do not decide to do a 3rd layer of stain

You need to sand the wood smooth and even before pre-staining. Why would you stain walnut with walnut stain, it doesn't make sense. Wwalnut is a perfect wood to leave natural.

Aussie tip - Instead of buying conditioner, I use mineral spirits with a little bit of Polyurethane mixed in. It blocks the thirsty pores fine for old dry wood.
I am actually thinking of switching to wood inks instead of stains.
