Zoom H5 - Sound Test - Review

Hello, can I ask a couple of questions? What sensitivity do you set on the microphone? I have a zoom h5 and it seems to record sound very quietly at level 6. Have you ever had one of the stereo microphones record louder than the other and you have to look for another location relative to the guitar? I hope you find time to answer me.

Is there a way to increase the output volume?
When I record, I get nice levels, with everything in the 50-85% range, and I can hear a great recording in the headset, but....
When I bring the file into Audacity, it comes in as a tiny thin line, that I need to Amplify 17-22x to see a sound wave pattern. This also increases hiss.

Does this have Hi-Z input and have u tried plug an electric guitar?

Thanks for this great video! I noticed there is no white noise on this recording and it sounds great. I've been struggling to avoid lots of white noise when using this recorder myself - recording acoustic guitar indoors. Do you know what im doing wrong? Some people say the pre amps aren't good, but you've got it sounding excellent. Would really appreciate any tips you can offer. Thank you :)

Nice test, think I’m sold on the H5 I’ve got a 70’s Martin HD28 and it’s so powerful and bass hardcore none of my large condensers can handle it, hopefully the H5 is the answer. I have to admit I preferred the unedited takes😀 cheers

very nice playing!! I've just bought a Zoom H5, is it normal when we gain the XY mic to level 7-->10 then we start to hear the "boiling" sound when it's totally quiet? Thank you for this video. I decided to buy H5 based on this quality vid

Hi, thanks for this test - sounds great! I just bought an H5 and I've been doing test recordings with the XY mic capsule, and I'm finding there's a lot of hissing that is recorded. To the point where it's super distracting and the audio is hard to use. Wondering if this is just an issue with my unit?


Have you encountered any hissing? I'm testing in a quiet bedroom, and trying all mic levels from 10 down to 1, and the hiss is just constantly there. Not to mention, the raw audio files are quieter (around -24 db average), so once I boost the levels in my DAW, it makes the hiss even louder.

Helpful video! I was curious about a few things. I'm sure the actual recording was very quiet, so for the final track how did you boost the volume to such a nice loud level without getting any clipping?
