Nikon Z8 vs Sony a7R V: A Battle of Mirrorless ALL-STARS!

I’ve been shooting different cameras for years but I end up always preferring the color processing of Nikon cameras.

Touting the Sony battery life? Until recently, you could loose all your footage of a long clip when the Sony battery ran out. What's that worth?

Sony FINALLY has ONE camera with standard NIKON SIZE / QUALITY SCREEN to look at!! OMG!!! HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO USE A SONY??!!!

The Sony have direct dials for immediate adjustments of ISO and Exposure compensation. Whereas the Nikon it's a two step process.

After all is said and done, I love my Nikon D850 more than ever...

Some other points I feel need consideration. The Nikon has a lower base ISO of 64, so almost an extra light stop down. Also a 1/32000 max shutter speed vs Sony’s 1/8000.

Excellent comparison video. Sony may have the edge but it sounds like Nikon is breathing down their neck on stills and has passed the Sony when it comes to video. As photographers we're lucky to have two such great camera options.

You can tell this video is very bias in Sonys favor. I kept deciding between the Sony and Nikon ecosystem. Due to Sony’s lack of firmware updates, and overpriced models that depreciate quick, I think I’m going to have to go with the Z8. Love the speed for sports and wildlife. I’d be using it for everything!

Hello. But is the story of Moiré in the EVF of the Sony A7RV is true? Is it just a bad talk? If EVF Moirè it's true, could it be resolved/fix ?

Do I need to have a lens mount adapter for my already owned lens or will they still attach for all nikon lens? For the Nikon Z8

Why would a camera comparison/review say that image quality is the least of concern when it comes to scoring. Is that not the only final thing that really matters. All the other stuff is just the journey that gets you there. Surely the way the image looks is the most important regardless of whether they both take amazing shots or not.

You know I know you gotta say whatever about your sponsor and advertisements but let's be real. EVERY single camera store is a joke and there isn't a single store that will give you a good or fair price for your camera gear trade in. I've gone to pawn shops and got better quotes. Would appreciate honest opinions over paid advertised opinions. Just my two cents.

Just wanted to say I love Chris & Jordan and I'm so glad they landed at PetaPixel. They brought me to the brand.

I use both, Nikon is pretty much a mirrorless in DSLR body, but compare to Sony the menu is way easier and intuitive than Sony. I also like the Nikon screen better than Sony, autofocus works great for me. However, I choose Sony over Nikon. Nikon both the body and lenses are just too heavy and big to carry around. Having said that just bought a Zf, for the retro look, but it’s heavy without the grip, so it’s a collectible buy for me not gonna get used often. Hope there is a year end sale on Sony A7C ii, that will be a great second camera.

There are no big differences between the top cameras of different brands. Only fanboys see big difference in favor of their used brand.

I had a A7RV and some great glass. No mistake about it it was a GREAT camera. But as mentioned, when I was trying to shoot birds and wildlife it fell flat. I ended up selling out and getting a Nikon Z9 with their 100-400S and 24-120S lenses. There is little doubt for action the Nikon runs rings around the Sony. The IQ is virtually identical with no real world difference in what it resolves. The Nikkor glass is at the head of it's class. Battery life is of course way beyond the Sony as it's a Pro body with a larger battery. Low light performance and ability to lock focus in the dark is far better on the Nikon (-9ev vs. -5ev). For someone that concentrates exclusively on static subjects the Sony is a very good performer.

The best thing about the Nikon’s is their sensors… which are made by Sony.

Right after I saw Jordan’s verdict give Nikon the win I realized that this was not an easy battle between these two cameras! Still in the middle of watching this video! I want the Nikon to win so bad because I love the design of the Z8

I have had every Sony A7R variant they have made and the R5 is certainly the best. That said, I would switch to the Nikon Z8 if it were not for the glass. The Sony native f1.4 primes are unmatched in the Nikon world and the amount of third party glass just cannot be compared (yet). There is really no reason for me to switch, as the quality of the Sony images are unmatched. That said, there is still something about the Nikon that calls to me...

Nikon colors are quite special, working with Nikon raw files is pleasure. Once you experienced Nikon you wouldn't want Sony.

What needs to be fixed: eye cup option for evf, fully articulating screen (a7v), dual card slots, ( even microSD). Also wtf is going on with those abysmal e-shutter speeds? Cmon Sony. Take it back to the drawing board.

I just remembered why I unsubscribed a while back. No matter what we compare - Sony wins! :)

14mm f1.4 sigma art, up until a week ago -- 35-150mm f2-2. 8 Tamron, etc etc. Those killer 3rd party lenses. Sony is the absolute winner. Also , they don't tell people outside of the USA that they're legally not allowed to sell their used Nikon cameras. Nikon was forcing eBay ads down when people tried to sell their gear. Total BS.

Sony lost me with that massive megapixel count. I just don't want massive files like that. Unfortunately,, Nikon lost me at electronic shutter only.
