The Saxons and Angles come from present-day Germany and in Germany the Saxon dialect is still spoken. (the English are Germanic).

The Anglo Saxons should of won. real england was founded by them, they were orthodox in origin. and even had Christian artwork in the same style, with “agio” as the word for Saint. the normans had to come in and ruin it all.

It's always odd knowing most English including myself and probably OP are descended from William the Conqueror as well as the very men who fought him.

Love this so much. It would be great to hear a follow up about Hereward the Wake. Then maybe even Edgar Aetheling - he is forgotten by history a little but he is an incredibly interesting guy. The last Aetheling, but he never submitted fully to the Normans although he regularly sought alliances with the likes of Robert Curthose to fight William II. He was the rightful King of England but ended up having more influence in Scotland, where ultimately he put his nephew on the throne of Scotland and regularly sided with the Scots against the Normans in England, basically against King William II. I even have a suspicion Edgar had something to do with William's "hunting accident", it is almost as if he deposed Donald Bán up in Scotland and then Edgar feels he has some sort of momentum because, within about a year, William Rufus mysteriously gets an "injury". He went on the first crusade, most likely almost immediately after the death of William Rufus, he served in the Varangian Guard, he was exiled to Normandy with Robert Curthose. Edgar Aetheling is just so interesting and his influence not just in England and Scotland but right across Europe shows that the Anglo-Saxons did not entirely die out with the defeats of Harold Godwinson and Hereward. In my mind there is a world where, upon the death of William Rufus, Edgar Aetheling could have been crowned King of England had he stuck around a bit but in reality I just don't think any of the Normans would ever have let that happen, I think Edgar probably knew that and maybe did not want to be King at that point with all the potential uproar it would cause. I think he quite liked staying slightly out of the limelight where he could manipulate people like Robert Curthose to lead a rebellion against his own brother.

Though I am proud of my Norman ancestry, I must give it to Harold Godwinson that he was no coward, he was a true warrior king and I will always admire him and all those who preferred to die in the heat of battle than enchained by their foe. God nerie þone cyning!

This is beautiful song and all, but the Normans are really not as bad as people like to claim them to be. I’m tired of the anti-Norman hate. It’s just a cope many fellow Anglos have tried to use to cast the blame of what England would become onto the Normans, hence making them the supposed reason for anti-English attitudes. The anti-Anglo is just as insane as the anti-Norman. The Normans and English are Germanic brothers whether you accept such or not, just as the Franks are Germanic brothers as well.
