This color educational/training film is about how to make a newspaper layout more appealing. There is no copyright at the beginning or end of the film so the date of the production remains unclear however based on research this is circa the 1970s.

Newspaper printing press at work. Writers work in a newsroom (:08-:38). Opening titles: Newspaper Layout, a Copley Production (:39-:52). Any newspaper layout can be improved. How is the following newspaper on the eyes? A newspaper is shown. Another newspaper is shown with a Spanish headline. A man in a suit lays out a newspaper. A newspaper is shown on the page being put together by color codes. (:53-2:43). Three newspapers are shown and then a man, the editor, looks over a newspaper. He turns the pages and stares down. He uses a red pen and marks up a paper's front page. A problem news layout is shown. (2:44-4:48). Problems can be fixed such as zig zag meandering body types. Square off body type. Art or pictures should tell a story. Multiple blocks are shown and newspapers are shown close up. The blocks move around the screen and pop up (4:49-6:11) Closeups of men and women typing.Men in a newsroom have a shoulder holster to hold their phones while they type. Women take notes, a man trades notes with a colleague. Type size selection is important and this is shown being worked on. Different sizes of type are shown being placed and ready for print (6:12-7:39) on a linotype type machine. Different news stories on a newspaper are shown with different placement for each. Nothing destroys eye appeal more than standardization. A group of people on a lawn point as they are being photographed. Photographers should take large images (7:40-9:02). A photographer is shown using a Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) camera. At 8:48 an image is enlarged in the darkroom using an enlarger. A man uses a ruler and writes on a chart. Closeups of pictures.Information on column spacing and changing columns is provided. Captions can run below or on the side of pictures. A man stares down at the newspaper again (9:03-10:06). Each newspaper has a format which should be followed but there are variations that can ben appealing without disturbing the format. Different formats are shown on the screen. Closeups of different types of pages are shown from editorial to sports (10:07-11:35). Different types of ornaments are shown. A newspaper layout is shown with red hot zones blinking. Make your newspaper more inviting, variety is crucial but must be appealing (11:36-12:35). A Walter Scott printing press for a newspaper is shown hard at work, printing the late edition.
