Ok I work in pysch and the things I seen that are accurate are: spy mirrors, grippy socks, locked windows, no strings in the patients clothing, and the handles on the doors (slightly accurate). the paper pants are only given in the er (rarely). the toilet paper, graffiti, bedding, tuna sandwiches, all are not accurate.

Ps. Some of the strict rules aren’t helpful. I think in the end it only makes my patients feel less comfortable, and it turn they think I don’t care…or understand what they are going thru.

Psych wards are unironically worse than prison, for the mentality and the reality. In prison, at least sometimes you might, potentially, have privacy. And you have a date at which you can leave, which can even come sooner if you behave and make a good case.

You can be in a psych ward forever. You can end up drugged up, stuck, against your will, and nobody will ever take you or your thoughts/complaints seriously because you are "unwell" - even if you aren't ill.

People have gone in both on accident or as a test while being 100% sane and safe, and have been held constantly, and even nearly convinced of their own FAKE ILLNESSES by staff.

What’s the difference between Amitted and committed? I am not a dangerous person when I was 17 I had an ugly break up and yeah I said I wanted to do something to myself I mean when a guys girlfriend, sleeps with his best friend who wouldn’t say things they don’t mean. My mom took it upon herself to send me to a hospital they let me leave, thankfully after a few hours, realizing I was no threat to myself, or others what I want to know is if I mark no to being committed to a mental hospital on my background check when I go to prison? If so, my mom really screwed me. I can’t find the answer anywhere online.

Everyone is rambling on about this being abuse and them not helping, but no. This is exactly what has to be done. They are doctors. Not your therapists, it’s not on them to fix your problems, they’re concern is to keep you safe. That is the number one priority. They’re job is to keep you healthy and alive not fix everything wrong in your life.

I live in Europe and were admitted to a psychiatric hospital way to often. By far the most helpful station was the station with the most freedom. The station doors were open day and night. As long as you could credibly distance yourself from carrying out suicide plans, you were not transferred to a closed ward. This meant that people were much more honest with doctors, nurses and therapists.
Depending on the disorder, there were some mandatory therapies. You could choose a large part yourself. There were people there who had been treated in closed wards for ages and had made no progress, but thanks to the leap of faith they made great progress in a short period of time. If you broke the ward rules, there was no punishment, but you had to write a behavior analysis, which was then discussed in therapy to see what led to the behavior and where you could start to change your behavior in the future to behave. Before sedatives were given, the nursing staff spoke to you. If someone had a panic attack, a severe state of tension or something similar, the nurses got through it together with the patients and thus conveyed self-efficacy. The concept is certainly not suitable for everyone and has limitations, but if you really want to work on your problems this is the right place. Studies show that suicidal patients make fewer suicide attempts in open wards than in closed wards.
