honestly the most interesting part of mind flayers to me isnt the mind flayers themselves but all the weird stuff they make. small race like a deep gnome? they make them into dog like beasts that surprisingly double as spies oddly. ropers? they turn them into unholy brain sucker versions of themselves letting them stun from like 50 feet away. they even allegedly take purple worms and make them into much smarter worms, who can use more worms to snipe people from miles away

My party managed to "tame" a Mind Flayer. His name is Svenagin Eggass, prisoner in the castle Sunblight. Our ranger has a knack for collecting heads of fallen enemies, and in his bag of holding, perfectly preserved, is a meal for Eggass. He ended up being somewhat of a mascot for our group next to our caged Kobold Trex

Here is a good idea for an NPC in a big city, make him a mind flayer that when the party meets him, he is nice and helpful, but off, very off, they then realize what he does, drugs, like lots of them

Having played ballders gate I can attest to just how much of a hard counter these things are to players If You don't have any counters to their mind abilities your entire party can be wiped out instantly.

My DM runs them as the Goa'uld of D&D. They've seen a serious threat from time to time.

Guess what.. I made a chaotic good mind flayer warlock geenie. He only eats baddies and fat shaped like brains call it the closest to “vegan” he gets to.
