I wonder how much overlap there is here with how pot smokers breathe when smoking.
That last breathing tip sounds a lot like how I take a toke. Obviously the joint contains active ingredients but I wonder how much this, supposedly immediate, stress relieving breathing technique is responsible for the immediate calming effects of a joint.
If or when I give up, should I keep toking on a pencil, taking another micro breath and exhaling slowly?
This is very interesting to me!

i m gonna give you one better , if you can find a way to get a machine that graphs HRV (heart rate variability) without lag , latency and is as real time as possible , you synch your breath with the curve and it make 40 years of mediation in 5mn

30 years ago, when I was in vary high high stress jobs,I found breathing was the key to coping. After that; I did very well. Even now, older than I like to admit, it’s the technique I go for.

My middle school choir teacher taught us cyclic sighing as a technique to help us sing and threw in As a “fun fact”, knowing most of his students had really bad anxiety, that you can do that to to help calm anxiety. since then I’ve done it and used it to help so many of my friends calm down too, so much so that im a go to when someone gets upset lol

How are people doing "mindful meditation" without first working on breath work? It's the fundamental step to mediate.

In India mindful maditation is very much connected with breathing pattern . Yogi's can control their breathing according to their need. Many of the yoga forms are simply breathing technique itself .

I've shallow mouth breathed and held my breath for my entire life due to anxiety, and now in my sixties am trying to start breathing deeper. It's a hard habit to break, and I normally only manage about 8 proper breaths a day, when everyone is asleep and it's quiet.

I'm wondering if this is shortening my life?

Interesting as a child I wad a major mouth breather as an adult I learned to breathe from the nose and mose people when breathing use the muscles just under there lungs to breathe and aren't really 100% using there lungs to breathe in or out

Great video! The long exhalation technique I learned 35 years ago while swimming competitively. We used it to saturate the muscles and lungs with extra oxygen to do sprint races without breathing in between strokes. It is highly effective, and have used ever since when swimming. my suggestion to increase effectiveness is to breathe in through the mouth as much as one can and then exhale through the nose to slow as much as possible the process. It’s true that after a few minutes, if done correctly, the extra oxygen makes you dizzy but keep going a few moments more after that and the process will relax your muscles and increase physical capability.

Years ago, I slipped on ice and broke a leg. I sat in the ER for six hours waiting to see someone who could deal with my injury. Needless to say, I was in pain and scared because I didn't know what to expect. I had read about alternate nostril breathing so started doing that, probably incorrectly but it had the desired effect, less pain and I was calmer.

I felt like you missed the breathing for dealing with pregnancy. Ee ee oh.

I also use box breathing to help get into a meditative state.

Made me think about swimming: a quick mouth inhale and a slow nose exhale.
