How Super Mario 64 DS is BETTER and why nobody is playing it

The DS remake would be better if it had good controls, but it doesn't. The extra content doesn't carry it far enough in my opinion.

I’ve been playing on a 3ds after growing up playing it on n64 when I was too young to beat levels without my older brother, and then playing it on my DS when I got older. On the 3DS it’s near perfect! I was trying to play it on my android tablet which was fine. But the rec room with a proper stylus is… everything! Haha

Been playing this today, and for that emulation part lemme just put a reminder you can just hit the Start button to auto select the save and continue button lol

I think the DS version is good, but I prefer the graphics of the N64 version as well as the way mario moves. I don't even mean the analog stick, I mean how much momentum Mario carries compared to any of the other 3D mario games. Also the screen size seriously sucks imo

super mario 64 DS was good for what it did ,it did let you play super mario 64 on the go.

No better in the slightest. The extra characters and levels don’t make up for the inferior gameplay and graphics. Super Mario 64 is the superior game. Full 360 analog movement, better graphics, and a more zoomed out camera allowing the player to see more preventing unnecessary deaths. The DS game is fun but the inferior controls and zoomed in camera means you will die when you shouldn’t die. The game feels worse to play the the original.

Edit: this is coming from someone who had a fun with the DS version and got 147 stars, never figured out the last 3. That being said the original is the better game.

Yes some of the models look sharper, but then you have the dulled color schemes in levels that were changed for no reason, the same if not uglier textures, and factually worse anti-aliasing. All of that stands and you wanna say this looks leagues better. I think i Just realized what you were smoking.

This game was my entire childhood. I played it everyday, and I recently replayed it. I beat the game a few days ago. It was an amazing experience. There are no words to describe how much I love it.

I played hours of DS, (on my 2ds) long Loong school nights were spent collecting coin, stars learning new “speedrun” tricks, trying to figure out glitches. Did you know you can stop yourself on peachs slide ans walk around. As a new father (19) I can’t wait to share this game with my son

Super Mario 64 DS is definitely best played on a 3DS because the 3DS's control stick is easier and more versatile to use. It's also a template for the controls in both Super Mario 3D Land and Super Mario 3D World.

Why the DS one it's better? It's not the extra 30 stars. It's not the new characters. It's not the minigames.

It's that the original is fucking full of bugs and completely broken It's horrendous and terrible, and I have no clue why people appreciate it more than the remake.

I was far more offended by you implying that the original Doom doesn't hold up to the new games. They're fundementally different experiences, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

And if you were going to do that, the apple (original Doom) is better than the orange (nu-Doom), anyways.

You also have to keep in mind not much capture cards for DS at the time so.....yeah. Plus capture cards are more abundant for consoles these days so might as well dust off that N64 cartridge. Also i don't know why but seeing you not use that superior circle pad on the 3ds is quite annoying when it does the 8 directional controls way better than the D-pad so it actually feel somewhat fun to play then. The camera is still shit but the biggest problem The Controls are taken care of when playing on a 3ds a superior system to the DS, sure you get used to it at first but if you touch the N64 one again then the DS one is going to feel like shit once you get back to it again as simply better camera and better controls

By far the better Mario 64. Controls suck but I don’t mind them that much since I grew up with this game so I got used to them.

Controls suck

This game literally gave people the one thing they'd been absolutely begging for from the original Mario 64- Luigi. And everyone just collectively decided to plug their ears and say "la la la i'm not listening" in response simply because the DS didn't have an analog stick (despite the original game using an N64 controller, which is literally worse in almost every other way aside from that.) SM64DS more than makes up for its lack of maneuverability in literally every other aspect, and does it all on a statistically far weaker and more restrictive console. SM64DS Mario has less polygons than SM64 Mario to put it into perspective. Anyone who bashes SM64DS is literally blinded by nostalgia because it is nothing more than the borderline the exact same game as SM64 with tons more to do and somehow better graphics on an inferior console with the one and only significant caveat being less directional control.

This was my first EVER video game so you can imagine my nostalgia for it is through the roof. However, as I have gotten older I view the controls as a huge bottleneck, and while the extra content is great, for the controls I think the original N64 rendition is better.

It's kinda weird how there still isn't a real definitive version of Mario 64 in spite of how popular and nostalgic the game is, like there are basically 3 versions, the original N64 version, the DS version and the Anniversary Collection of Switch which isn't regularly sold anymore, the N64 and Switch Collection lack the added DS content and DS version requires a DS or 3DS and it has somewhat worse controls

how would you have any idea how many people are playing each of these games, they dont exactly have steam charts for consoles that had no internet connection and emulators

I firmly believe that if SM64DS had native analog support it would be the definitive version.

People gotta understand that better graphics doesn't make the game any better or worse, even if it had more content.

as someone who grew up with the og version of sm64, I was always very interested in the DS version since it was the only remake we ever got, and it's also handheld.

I finally got the chance to try it out around 2011-2012 on the 3ds, and it kinda sucked tbh.... I mean yeah sure there is a lot of new content, and there are more playable characters. However, the controls were atrociously bad imo, controlling mario felt extremly sluggish and limited compared to the og version, and the camera was even worse cuz you gotta control it using the touchscreen which was very uncomfortable. The remake basically lacked pretty much everything that made sm64 such a special game, the amazing gameplay and satisfying controls (minus the camera ofc lol, which was even worse on DS anyway). The reason why everyone choose the og over the DS version is simply because the n64 version is just so much more fun to play, it has aged really well and the gameplay is arguably even better than many modern plattformers today.

Anyway long story short, I ended up selling the game like a day later lmao.
