What is Node js?

I don't consider using JavaScript to be an advantage. I can learn a new language in a few days, but a year with JS and it still makes no sense. And React makes me want to break things, and I'm not a breaking things kind of guy.

If it is on the server why not use C, Python or even PHP.
Why javascript on the server? I'm willing to believe it's a good idea I just don't understand why yet.

Could I use node.js to send results of a test score which users will take on my site to my mysql server? I have a function which alerts the test/score they got on the page at the moment, I'd rather store there score in my database though.

I completed your Mastering React course but I am having trouble uploading the backend to heroku because mLab doesn't exist anymore and I had to use atlas.
