Know that 80% of Americans operate their car in the "severe" category and NEED to change their engine oil much sooner than they actually do. If you're one of those 80% change your engine oil every 3,000 miles and never go over that time. { Your first oil change should be at 1,000 miles }.

"Severe" category { you are in this category if even 1 of these applies to you }

Frequent idling for long periods of time, such as stop-and-go driving in heavy traffic. Many vehicles are subjected to this condition twice a day in commuting to major cities.

Sustained highway driving in hot weather, such as vacation travel.

Towing a boat or trailer, carrying heavy objects on a rooftop rack.

Driving in dusty conditions, such as dirt or gravel roads.

Prolonged operation at sub-zero temperatures.

Driving on steep hills or mountains on a regular basis.

If you use an oil filter that filters out particles down to the 30 micron range, you will have considerably less wear { about 50% less over 10 years } on your engine than using the standard 40 micron filters. Check your engine air filter on a regular basis and change it when it's dirty. If it's a hybrid, clean { vacuum } / check the hybrid filter or your battery will have a much shorter life.

And don't drive with a weak battery { consider getting a $40 battery tester. Some also test alternators }. Electronics are sensitive to poor voltage etc. and there are dozens and dozens of modules on modern cars and you should consider all of them to be expensive.

Good day I was recently at the Toyota dealer ship and had my oil changed This is a 2020 hybrid with 40,000 miles. The service advisor tried to sell me Crankcase Cleaning with oil & Fuel conditioners. I have never heard of this before and I declined the service. from watching You Tube I see what is does but it should be done 100-200 miles before an oil change. Is this needed? as part of regular maintenance?

Just bought a 2023 Corolla. Sticker in engine compartment says to use 0W-8 oil. My question - I've been told that Toyota originally said to use 0W-16 in this engine but switched to recommending 0W-8 a number of months ago. Can either 0W-8 or 0W-16 be used? Reason I ask is that 0W-8 is over $25 a quart. This makes a standard oil change cost $200. I understand the reason Toyota says to use 0W-8 is to improve gas mileage 0.8%. Whatever gas mileage savings I get from using 0W-8 instead of 0W-16 seems to be more than offset by the expensive oil required.

I have a 2023 TRD Sport I tow an enclosed trailer they won’t change oil until 10,000. Have a 2012 Scion XB have taken to dealership for all oil changes. At first they had my wife coming in at 10,000 miles then about then after a few years they changed it to 5000 miles. It is now using 1 1/2 quarts between oil changes and after every oil change in the XB I check the level they overfill the oil by about 1/2 quart. Also changed my plastic oil cartridge housing to a Toyota aluminum one and put in a catch can on the pcv line.

AMD...I'm sure I'm not the only owner with this question. Can I get some opinions please? I do my oil changes on my 2020 2.5 Camry. I buy Mobil 1 in a 5 qt. bottle from WalMart. The engine requires 4.8 qts. for a fresh change with filter. Does anyone see any potential issues of over-filling the engine by .2 (two tenths) of a quart...to use the entire 5 qt. container...instead of having 2 tenths left over?

I went in for my first 5k oil change and tire rotation. They also reduce the tire pressure to factory settings since I bought it used. After the oil change and tire rotation, I noticed the engine kicks in more often affecting gas mileage and wonder if the dealership recalibrated the ecu. I would light tap on the pedal and the engine kicks in immediately. If they did recalibrate, why would they do that? I appreciate your insight and knowledge if this is a possibility.

I owned a 2005 Camry 2.4 and took fantastic care of it. The engine air filter can be vacuumed between the pleats if it is lightly dirty with particles of leaves, bugs, etc. No need to buy a new filter every time. Same with cabin filter. Use good judgement. I always replaced oil filter with Toyota filters and Mobil 1 synthetic. 218,000 trouble free miles!

FINALLY, someone who knows Toyotas. General mechanics don't know much about them because they don't break down that much.
I saw your video about cleaning the throttle body on a 4Runner and I can't find it now, but my question is related to that subject. I have owned five 4Runners so far and LOVE the reliability. The fifth one I bought second hand with 80K Km on it. Yes , KM because it is in Chile , 4000 miles South, where mechanics are few and far between . Real mechanics that is because in our town there are several but none that are any good. I drive from Pucon to Valdivia, 170KM to find a decent shop.
Here is my problem that no mechanic or Toyota dealer in Chile, or in Houston, Texas has been able to diagnose.
One told me to clean the throttle body, which I did. It was dirty but not the solution.
Symptoms: Only in hot weather. while driving along on a hot day the engine will suddenly lose power. I will idle or stall, the timing is retarded to where it is barely tuning over. I turn off the engine and start it again and it somehow resets the computer or something and it runs OK... for a while. I have got to the point where, while driving, I shift it to neutral, turn off the engine, turn it on again and shift into drive and it starts and runs again... for a while. Sometimes it happens while the engine is idling at a stop. In winter it runs just fine. Someone suggested it may be the air density sensor which is really a temperature sensor. A wiring issue because what I know about sensors is that they work or they don't . Very hard to trace the five or six wires in that harness. No idea where the computer is hiding. On the internet there are suggestions about the crankshaft position sensor, but the symptoms do not match the problem.
What can I try next?

Bought my 08 Camry new. 1st oil/filter change was @ 500 miles, 2nd change @ 1500 miles, 3rd change @ 3000 miles, then every 3000 miles since using Mobil-1 oil and filters. Overkill? I'm sure some ppl will say yes, but as the Car Care Nut says, oil and filters are cheap. The way I see it, have you ever heard of an engine being damaged from oil that is too clean?

Engine Oil:
- Use the oil weight indicated on your oil cap. Stick to that weight.
- Regularly change your oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.
- Synthetic oils are common, especially for newer models.
- Don't exceed recommended mileage intervals for oil changes.

Oil Filters:
- Always change your oil filter with every oil change.
- Use original Toyota oil filters for better performance and quality.
- Avoid skipping oil filter changes to ensure proper engine health.

Air Filters:
- Check and replace your engine air filter when it's dirty.
- No fixed interval – replace it as needed, depending on driving conditions.
- Consider the quality of the filter and its condition, not just the time.

Cabin Air Filter:
- Replace your cabin air filter when it's dirty.
- Consider using a charcoal-activated cabin filter for better air quality.
- Change the charcoal filter annually for optimum performance.

- Hybrid Fan Filter (For Hybrid Vehicles):
- Hybrid vehicles have a fan filter that's crucial for battery health.
- Check if your hybrid has a fan filter; if not, add one to prevent high voltage battery issues.
- Regularly clean or replace the fan filter as needed.

- General Tips:
- Use original parts where possible, but also consider reputable aftermarket options.
- Shop around for prices to ensure you're getting the best value.
- Don't exceed manufacturer-recommended maintenance intervals.

When to Change:
- Change engine oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months.
- Replace oil filters, air filters, and cabin filters as needed based on their condition
- Check and clean the hybrid fan filter regularly.
- Follow your vehicle's manual and the recommendations from a trusted technician.

What to Change:
- Engine oil and oil filter during every oil change.
- Air filters (engine and cabin) when they are dirty.
- Cabin air filter annually, especially if using a charcoal-activated filter.
- Hybrid fan filter periodically to prevent high voltage battery issues.

Remember to consult your Toyota's owner's manual for specific recommendations tailored to your vehicle model and year. Regular maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your vehicle and keep it running smoothly.

Sir, I brought my wife 2020 RAV4 and follow your advice on oil change on new vehicle first 1k miles. I have change the first oil change on the RAV4 at 1K miles. Now at 34K (recently took long trip from TX -LA). I had spent $600 on oil change on RAV4 as of Aug 2023. My RAV4 still run without issue. I now recently got me a 2023 SR5 TRD 4x4 Tundra and change my first oil at 1.2K miles and will do next schedule at 5k. Thank you for advice.

The dealership insists that I should have my first service at 10,000 km. However, I recall you mentioning that it's best to have a service every 6 months or every 5,000 km. Thank you, Mr. Ahmed.
