Stay in a tourist area or better yet stay in a resort. I’ve seen and heard of story’s of people being kidnapped, extortion, scammed, mugged, and murdered. I don’t care how tough you are … but when a bunch of masked up men hop off a pick up truck with automatic guns while you’re strolling, or driving in a foreign country (Their Back Yard) it will make anyone crumble. Stay in groups of 2 or more. Like I said I’ve seen way too much crime here. Keep in mind the average Mexican only earn on average of $10USD a day! That’s 140 pesos. It is still a very poor country.

One thing about the wrist bands. If you go in town, you may have some people try and make you think you have met them before because they can tell what resort you are at. Potentially use this against you in some way, just be aware.

How about TripAdvisor? I'm planning to sign up there for excursion. Also, good thing I always get pesos n easy to exchange it since I live in San Diego, CA. Near Mexico border

How safe are the streets of Cancun? Would a group of gringos be okay traveling the streets?

Water.
Mexico is old. Oldest parts of towns were built in 1530. Plumbing done with terracotta or ceramic pipe that is 500 years old so inflow and outflow mix from 500 yo cracks.

I drank the water once to say I did it. Color flavor and consistency of dilute sewage. Yellow with particles.

I lived but I have eaten all over the 3rd world so I am tougher than most. Not recommended.

Even locals do not wash up with nor drink the water. All have tinacos with filtration.
