Adding and Removing VAT (Value Added Tax) using a calculator

nobody explains why is for 20% Total sum / 1.2. Why is it 1.2 and why do we use X*(1+0.2).

Hi if my vat is 4,944.99 what is the figure before that vat. Here our vat is 1.25% can u help me the gross is 41,700.75

is vat our total amount
