Its a long history

I am an ARMY who got my first taste of kpop with SHINee, f(x), BIGBANG, SNSD, etc. To this day, I listen to and enjoy a lot of different artists, even though BTS is my favorite and I devote the majority of my attention to them. Which puts me in a strange situation. I live in this space between many ARMYs who refuse to acknowledge/respect the kpop artists who came before BTS, and kpop fans who refuse to accept/respect what BTS has done to revolutionize and popularize the genre globally.
"BTS paved the way" in so many ways; anyone who denies this or downplays their impact is straight-up delusional. That being said, some ARMYs need to educate themselves and practice being humble like our boys. Because while BTS indeed paved the way, they did it by using the pavement mixed by the artists who came before them. They were inspired by, and learned from, many different artists (both from Korea and the US). Those artists, in turn, benefitted from the hard work of the people who preceded them. EVERYTHING IS A CONTINUUM. So just quit fighting and enjoy the ride, yeah?

As someone who got into Kpop from the 1st Gen, I grew up obsessively listening to Lee Jung Hyun (what a goddess) and Baby VOX (insanely beautiful queens with catchy tunes). I went off Kpop for a while then came back for 2nd Gen thanks to TVXQ and Rain (sex icon :3) , 3rd gen was really the best with all the groups i loved but Brown Eyed Girls was my absolute favorite, super talented and unique (sadly not a single mention in this video T.T) . Now i rarely follow Kpop like I used to but BTS, IVE, TWICE, ITZY and Stray kids make me believe we are still along way from the peak. Kpop FTW !

I’m not going to lie I kinda wished I discovered Kpop in the 2nd gen but I was born in 2001 so I discovered Kpop in 2016

One thing i'm sad as Korean is that you jumped to H.O.T from Seotaiji boys so quick :( Because there was important period of kpop dance, r&b, hiphop during 1994~1996 before 1st idol generation (H.O.T) starts. Solid, R.ef, Noise, Dj doc, Uptown, Cool, Roora, Turbo and so on. They were much more popular and have more hit songs than the group called 'idol(1996)' you inserted there. i don't know why you picked idol there. Anyway about SM, Hyun jinyoung should be stated as first solo idol that SM made before H.O.T. And it would be better if you stated idol generation 'only' not other singers if you wanted to focus on idols and SM JYP YG HYBE. Because once you put some ballads singers during 2000~ before TVXQ debuts, you had to state other ballads/other genre singers during 90's such as 015B, Panic etc as well. And if you mention Zico and other hiphop rappers later you had to mention Drunken Tiger, Honey family etc in 90s too. About overseas popularity, it would be Klon, NRG before BoA. They were popular in China. So was H.O.T. As Korean who loves kpop, i say this not to offend you. But sometimes it is sad that people think kpop is idol's only

i know you can't metion every single group, but would be lovely a quick mention to ftisland since they're "pioneers" of idol bands and got a bit overshadowed by cnblue due to their lacking company...its sad that their hard work its not recognised by general audience nowdays...

YES, BTS STANDS SUPREME!!! FINALLY SAID, BIGGER THAN K POP!!!! Not buying their way to the top, all on their own and with the help of ARMY. Love how other artists from previous generation also say that BTS has indeed paved the way for K Pop on the global stage, making it possible for K Pop to be seen. Thank you for sharing.

There were soooooooo many more pop sjngers and groups before HOT… 소방차, 박남정, 구피, 터보, r.ef, 쿨, 클론, dj doc, 룰라, 투투, 김완선, 잼, 듀스, 솔리드, 노이즈, 코코, 김원준 현진영 etc and also many similar “idols” debuted similarly e.g. NRG. I dont know why no one mentions NRG, because they were soo popular back then.

Watching this video again in 2023 makes me realise that kpop has evolved SO much in just 3 years and there is so much more to come, the records by kpop artists are soaring, multiple groups are now only getting bigger and bigger and when I was an initial kpop stan this was something I would have had never predicted.

Apart from all the popularity BTS is having, we should thank BigBang for inspiring them. BigBang played a major role for the 3rd generation to become more popularized globally.
