You can see this film named in wikipedia as part of the filmography of Gabriel Veyre. That's true, but if you play it at 0.25 speed and zoom it 8x focusing the chest of the closest duelist, you can see a jet of fluid coming out from his jacket. That had required a controlled explosion special effect that I don't know if was available in 1896.
Besides, a man tries to cover the face of the fallen from the camera with his hat, when it is supposed that everyone know they're acting.
Could it be that Veyre filmed a real event?

Motion picture film was still in it's infancy in 1896 so filming a duel seems unlikely and anyhow sound in film didn't start until the 1920's.

This looks fake but there was an actual gun duel between Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton where Hamilton was killed. It was July 11, 1804 and Aaron Burr was serving as Vice President at the time.

Only thing weird is how he falls instantly dead into a chest shot.
