My friends look at me weird when I tell them I had a Dreamcast 😂 as a 7 year old you’re not paying attention to sales, reviews, popularity etc, it’s just the new gaming system and I asked for it because it was new.

I had two Dreamcast systems; one for my son and one for myself. We have always felt that it was WAY ahead of its time. A favorite game of mine was Super Magnetic Neo. The graphics were so fluid and pretty, and the game play was excellent. Dreamcast also pioneered the concept of being able to play a portable version of the game on a removable module built into the controller. It’s unfortunate that they were plagued by CD drive issues.

I remember the surprise of coming across the Dreamcast when I was dropped off at the video game rental store next to my dads work during the school holidays. In the late 90s in New Zealand gaming news wasn’t as available so the console releasing came under the radar.

I’ve never forgotten the excitement of walking in and seeing Crazy Taxi & Soul Calibur being projected on the wall with everyone gathered around the console waiting for a turn. The console was so far ahead at the time and I still really want one even now 😅.

Honestly I grew up on the PS2 and have been a PlayStation fan my whole life. But even I will admit that the Dreamcast is one of if not the most groundbreaking console we’ve ever seen. Apart of me wishes I got a Dreamcast as a kid instead of a PS2. However the Dreamcast was already discontinued that holiday season when I got my PS2.

Interesting that Sega released this on 9/9/99 and it has the weird swirly pedo symbol for it’s logo. Not to mention the system before was called the Saturn. Very masony.

As someone who’s trying to collect every Sonic game, I got my Dreamcast with Adventure 1 on November 7, last year.

Experiencing the Adventure games for the first time, raising the chao on the VMU, feeling the surprisingly comfortable controller, playing SA2’s 2 player with friends, and experiencing the consoles atmosphere. Top tier console.

Just wish I could utilize it’s online functionalities.

9. Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
10. The Godfather

I remember seeing a kiosk playing NFL 2K set up in a Software Etc. window at a local shopping mall. I was absolutely blown away by the graphics, the sound effects, the commentary! And that was only the beginning! That freakin' cool cyberpunk-y commercial introducing the system as a badass high tech thief (presumably sent by Sony) tried to steal it; the bizarre, off the wall games like Space Channel 5, Typing of the Dead, Cannon Spike, Blue Stinger, and Seaman; the awesome arcade perfect ports of games like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Soul Calibur; so many experiences that were the ultimate realization of the genres and types of games I'd grown up with lived on this console. The Dreamcast perhaps wasn't the most powerful or most perfected piece of technology ever introduced, but it was incredible just the same, and well worth the investment!

Great video, thank you for that. You said what I felt about this console for years. Never a console had such an amazing line up in such a short period of time. And it will never happen again, because of production time/cost. But also because of the innovative period it was in. This was like the ultimate good bye, but such in a great way. I don't think it was the worst selling console. In Volume, yes. But in Volume VS time on the market? Nah. In less than 2 years, selling almost 10 million console, is actually a better score than the xbox nor Gamecube. With the A T & T deal they had just before pulling out the plug, it would have been way more than that. Because the internet was becoming a thing, and that's the weapons Sega had to fight the DVD player of the ps2. We'll never know.

I'm 35 and soon to be 36. Born in 87. My first system was a Nintendo, but my first love was the sega genius. Streets of rage. Don't get me started. Idc what anyone says. Sega Dreamcast was it. I honestly think it was better than ps2. 2k put NBA live in the grave. That game came from visual concepts. Dreamcast birthed one of the most played games to date. Just bad business choices in the past. Like sega Saturn for example. Plus there was so much hype behind the ps2 the dreamcast never really gotta chance. It was almost like the boy who cried wolf. They just didn't have enough financial backing. They got a whole new cast to work on that console. One of the main guys was from Sony. They really came out with a gem using the bare minimum because they were in a hole financially. On top of that going toe to toe with Sony. It was a popularity contest and sony won. Dreamcast was a better Xbox with out the financial backing. There never would've been an Xbox. Xbox ran with what sega dreamcast had going. One of the greatest systems ever the dreamcast. When dreamcast got discontinued that was really the death of sega. Alot of us older people grew up on sega. It's really one of the saddest stories in gaming history. It was a Japanese xbox fr. It was literally Xbox before Xbox, but better. 😔

I stupidly declined to buy a Dreamcast at the back end of its life - when you could not give it away. 20 years later, I rectified the error and brought the Dreamcast. It is a magnificent fin de siecle. In era today of patches, microstransactions and an industry which is ONLY now about the buck, artistic development, expression, joy and love of the medium is another time, Sega (like Nintendo) loved the medium. Sure they failed but gosh look how they tried. The Dreamcast is a magnificent machine and turn of century retro tech. A thing of beauty which incredible games. Thank you Sega.

I was a HUGE Sega fan and booster going all the way back to the Sega Master System and even convinced other kids to buy the SMS and later the Genesis and Game Gear. After spending $229 on the Sega CD, $189 on the Genesis, and then finding that I would have to spend ANOTHER $189 for the 32X just to keep up--in spite of SO MANY awful games, I was 100% done--just on the rumor that a $4-500 Saturn was already on its way out. If even I wouldn't buy their machines, why would anyone else? That was a HUGE investment in the world of kid-dom.

I walked into a department store one day ready to give SEGA one last chance. The "128-bit Dreamcast" was now down to $99, but the guy behind the counter assured me that SEGA had just announced that they were "discontinuing" the console. Why? "They just are." The company was finally in a position to maintain a lead at that sought after sub-$100 console market and could've made just as much money per title as SONY and NINTENDO going for high volume. Gamers were already so bitter with the company that many former SEGA fans now wanted the company to go under.

Between 1994 and 1997, SEGA of Japan had forced a series of stupid decisions down on the rest of us that left us looking like dupes in front of our friends. The insanity of their decisions brought them from 55% market share to less than 3% in just three years!

I had nearly forgotten why I had the nostalgia for the DreamCast that I could not explain. It was still an era where gameplay was more important than graphics. Thank you for highlighting Shenmue. It's gotten so much bad press, but looked like a game I would have enjoyed! I used to love grinding Phantasy Star Online for that slim chance of a red box! Thanks for clarifying those memories

idk if you or anyone else will ever see this, but Shenmue being directly profitable was never actually important. At the time of Shenmue's development, Sega issued budgets per department and not per project. There was never a big row at Sega internally about Shenmue being unprofitable because a Virtua Fighter release came out of the same budget allotment that was profitable enough to cover the development costs of both games between arcade and console releases. Shenmue as a game was in the red, but for the budget period in question, Sega AM2 was actually in the green overall.

Everyone knows why PS2 was so popular - it was a DVD player that looked like DVD player and cost less than a DVD player.
It was THE ONLY saving grace for PS2 - parents bought it as a cheapest DVD player so their kids could play games too (including ps1 games). So the install base became massive quite fast. The console itself was a piece of shit, everyone knows that. Like literal junk. But there was enough of consoles sold so everyone rolled with it - more consoles, more customers, more developers and so on and on. Sony even tried to replicate the success with PS3's blue ray and backwards compatibility and it MASSIVELY backfired because no one cared by that time. And that's why PS4 was so different in comparison - just a PC hardware with console UI. Which is obvious choice these days - to play safe because software is vastly more important than hardware.
