Slight correction, there is an apt repo on the website not sure how I missed it. But this seems to just be setup for debian so no guarantees it'll work on any other debian based system. Some users are reporting issues getting the package installed however

Hey Brodie, I'm not sure if you're aware but it seems like Thorium now uses a more recent release version of Chromium (2 weeks old at the time of writing this comment).

Regarding Manifest V3, it looks like there's an open GitHub issue where someone suggested the extension "Adhost-adblocker" that works by filtering hostnames.

Yeah, get on the hype train. Whenever one bashes something without suggesting an alternative, is not worth a grain of salt.

How about firefox:
+ Doesn't use chromium engine
+ Has better extensions
- None

At one time it was about a 50/50 share of DNT vs non-DNT users, so there was nothing you could do to shake the extra entropy added by that field. Certainly you should choose whatever setting the majority are using.

Thorium videos did not aged that well huh? As for the cause, Chris Titus said on a later video, "I guess people dress up like bears and stuff and rabbits" 😅😅😅

Thorium seems to work well in Windows but trying to install it in Linux Mint is a nightmare, I think it needs snap which is a no-go.

This literal neckbeard decided Chris made a video that got good views so he'd pick apart the project for views, "But its not x y or z package manager", spoilers, not everyone has a target audience of Linux. "It ships with an adblock that relies on mv2" - well yes, its also the current manifest, so its not going to ship with mv3 adblock is it? Because mv2 is still suitable. Its not currently end of life, it makes sense to support what is currently active, also it frees up time to look for future options if it was a quick implemention. "Its out of date" well, you said yourself its a handful of guys working oni t, maybe they haven't got around to compiling a new version of it. I doubt its a 30 hour project for them, it was probably intended as a hobby at first and it blew up more than they expected.

🙄

Do not track: "A lot of sites do not respect that" - That's certainly true. But what that does is to express the users intent. EU regulations had quite a huge impact on what sites do on the web. Sites that do not respect such regulations and settings might then become prone to automatic responses from browsers. If a browser set to no-track detects tracking from that site, it might mark the site as abusive and publish the sites status.

This may not work out and we might not want mainstream browsers to censor the web, just want to note that such a mechanism is not useless just because it doesn't have much of an immediate tangible effect today.

Given the inherent flaws in thorium I think Alex would be better off having volunteered to add his work to brave since that would be helping a far bigger audience and allow his specialty tweaks to be focused on while not neglecting other aspects

firefox or librewolf in response to google's manifest 3 plans for chrome/chromium based browsers.

or maybe brave i guess, if you insist on sticking to a chromium based browser, though i'm not sure how well they would fare compared to firefox in this regard.

I don't even know what browser TO use for security/privacy and adblock... Browsers are generally elusive to me
I wanna stop using OperaGX after hearing how bad their Privacy is, don't even trust GX's built in "VPN". I dunno - what do you guys think?

I like Thorium. Manifest v2 sunset next year will affect all Chromium-based browsers, so it'll be interesting to see what happens. In the meantime, having a browser built with optimized compiler flags supporting modern architectures and lots of the evil google cruft removed seems like a win to me. Brave is getting more and more bloated all the time, Chrome is flat-out spyware, vanilla Firefox is also bloated and loaded with mozilla cruft (though LibreWolf is a nice alternative.) I'm also impressed that the developer compiles a Thorium version for Win7 - not going to debate Win7 use, just a thumbs up from me as I think that's awesome. Bottom line - what good alternatives really exist, if you want security and web compatibility? I loved Pale Moon in the early days, but the number of website breakages was just too much past a certain point. I guess you could compile your own version of Chromium, but that's a bit too much overhead for me. Will continue watching Thorium as currently I like what I see, with most of the issues you brought up being hypothetical (though valid) ones.
