2022 Kia Sportage review (inc. 0-100): New best mid-size SUV?

we are considering Sportage 1.6 T-GDi HEV 4WD A6 in that 30th anniversary edition AGAINST .... Honda ZR-V in Advanced edition and I really cant tell which one, pricing here is pretty much the same. we are family of 3. What do you think?

Hyundai and kia’s rebrand (both in terms of branding but also in terms of style and car design) is absolutely fantastic. It’s made an enormous difference to the feel of the brand and the perceived quality of the cars. Love it.

Yup bought one, KIA Sportage mild hybrid petrol AWD GT-line. happy with everything . Mega happy with the driver assist features, very good drive,effortless overtaking ability and welcome mpg economy. A real keeper!

Really don’t like touchscreen menus to control infotainment. Hard to change settings without peeking.

Android auto hangs when you most need it and also sometimes its laggy where GPS is behind the car actual location which is a nuisance when you are driving in unknown city! Can't be trusted and had to actually fit my phone for reliable navigation!

Looks great, but a bit put off by all the news of KIA and Hyundai having engine problems.

I've literally watched like 30 videos in the last few days as I'm looking for an SUV now. My budget is max. of $50 000. I would normally go for Skoda Kodiaq RS but $70 000 is just too much. What would you recommend Paul? There are some decent cars like Hyundai Tucson or new Kia Sportage or even Haval. Now Chery came back with OMODA 5 which unfortunately has no 5-star ANCAP yet but it's really cheap. But the boot is too little. I need to fit 2 big suitcases. I'm looking for a petrol car. Don't like diesel. I've gone through all comments and videos + your car reports on Car Expert but I would like to hear your personal recommendation. If you could give me 3 top cars in this range I appreciate it. Thanks David

I got the 2023 model SX+ Diesel in steel grey. I have a 6 months wait for delivery.

Paul from Australia and Ciro from South Africa has such different styles in presenting the cars, but just about the only two I watch on new releases. Paul a bit more critical and technical, Ciro a more like an ordinary guy would experience the car. Keep up the good work boys.

Never trust a petrol engine from KIA esp. a turbo one.
As you said jerky shifting and small turbo engine how it becomes "The best midsize SUV"?

I purchased the 2022 Sportage 2.0L Turbo Diesel AWD and I'm extremely happy with it...a real pleasure to drive and ticks all the practicality boxes including a decent towing capacity (1900kg braked) .

that is probably one of the best cameras on any review I have seen. from a kia no less. brilliant. it is absolutely essential on any modern car and bemusing to see poor quality in new cars such as the rav 4.

Great SUV if you can afford over $50K driveaway but the lower level models are cut back dogs. Kia strips out all the basic stuff you expect from a modern car & garbage 2.0 L motor.

$50K, to expensive for the average Joe! At that price, you mose well start looking at a BMW.

With the android auto and 1/3 of the screen not being utilised, this was recently fixed with an update that Kia has to load up when servicing, update is covered under warranty.

I really feel they should replace that stupid 1.6 with the dual clutch with the 1.6 hybrid with 6 speed auto that’s in the US idk why we got that engine. I test drive the diesel and turbo 1.6 and the 1.6 was garbage felt so unpredictable. The diesel was very good though. Anyway I’m getting a Forester as it was cheaper then the diesel Kia. I already have a diesel Pajero for towing I don’t really need another one

Yes I have ordered my GT diesel. Ordered in May 22 was due late August but now late September. I am still not sure about buying a KIA as I have been a lover of Japanese and German built cars, but let's give it a go and see..
P.s The grooves on the back of the seat are to hold hand bags or ipads and tables I was told when buying.

Did a test drive on the 2 litre GT Line. Ride was pretty smooth. The issue I had was the vibration you get when you're on standby - it's pretty significant. Like to know if others have felt the same or I was unfortunate to drive a car with issues.

only negative takeaway i can see is that its not electronic steering wheel tilt adjustment. so when when you have seat memory saved for like 2-3 drivers, it need to be manually adjusted. A bit of a let down, but still a great tech car for the value.

I have noticed a few reviewers comment on the gearbox been abit 'clunky' in regular drive modes when they 'punch it or at lower speeds'
The average family driver will not notice this, but for nit picking enthusiast that do (myself included) I believe the answer to this, is the paddle shift that seems to go unmentioned or utilised in the review videos iv watched to date.

Hey Paul, great review. I'm not entirely sure what the design on the back of the headrest is for, but it seems like a great spot to hang your coats, jackets, blazers etc.

Thanks Paul for a very informative review. I noticed a manual in the glovebox when you opened it. My diesel Sport + only has a QR code to download to your phone. A bit disappointing for an otherwise exceptional car.
