Does setting up the VPN server have to be through OpenVPN? I already have a Private Internet Access account so was curious if I could use that instead? Thanks in advance

Isnt it more secure to setup the vpn on router level instead of passing the traffic through the router and terminating the connection on the NAS?

You left us open? With some options. You wanted to show how we access from external connection. Why do'nt you close the circle?

Hey WunderTech Would love if you can help answer this for me! If I connect to my NAS via DDNS and I am on my local network would I still be limited by the WAN speed? Or would it know to switch me over to local router LAN speeds? For example My NAS is connected via LAN arrogation but my WAN is only a gigabit connection but my LAN is 2gigabit.

I have a problem when set up DDNS, for some reason "checkbox Get a certificate from Let's Encrypt and set it as default" is gray out for me. Any ideas why? Thanks!

Great video, thanks. I have an issue, ddns is not updating when my external IP changes. I'm a bit lost as to why. Do you have any suggestions?

Hey Wundertech, thanks for the video. I am exactly in this situation, I am behind a double-nat (ISP modem/router combo). I understand the part about setting up ddns (using synology's service, check returns as normal), but I am not entirely sure how to proceed then setting up vpn server. This is what I intend to use it for. I would have wished if you proceeded to also demonstrate that part, or please, please, point me in the right direction. Again, I wish to access my nas externally through vpn, via ddns. Thank you in advance. P.S. loved your written tutorial on xpe dsm 7.

A bit confused. I have DDNS up and running along with the VPN server. However, on my android, I'm still able to connect and log in, "without," enabling the VPN client. Why is this?

What is the "Dynamic IP address" for in the OpenVPN configuration? I've watched all the intermixed tutorial videos (DDNS, VPN, Initial Setup, specific router Por Forwarding instructions) and so far, the Synology external name only redirects me to the router's (not synology's) login page.

hostname would not take more than 7 characters. 7 characters and it connected successfully. more characters and it failed

Thanks for the video much appreciated. My DDNS is set up correctly according to this video with the status stating 'Normal'. I'm trying to access my Synology via ssh through terminal and I keep getting a connection timed out error message for port 22.

I've set up port forward rules for the external IP to my synology via my router which the synology is connected to but nothing seems to get me past that error message. Turning off firewall on both router and synology hasn't fixed it either. I even flushed the DNS cache on my mac. Still nothing.

Not sure what else there is to try but open to suggestions.

Thank you for this video, it was well explained. However, I have a question: at the end of the video, you seemed to jump quite quickly into all these fairly technical methods of accessing the NAS, including via VPNs etc. Is all of this necessary? The official instructions simply say to access the NAS over the internet by typing the hostname into the browser, and when I attempt to this I get either continuous loading or '401 Authorization Required'. I have used nslookup and got a response, and as far as I can tell the ports are forwarded correctly on the router, although I may be missing something. Would you perhaps know anything about this?

You said that if I check the box to obtain a TLS certificate from Let's Encrypt at the time I set up DDNS, then I won't have to open TCP port 80 or 443 for certificate renewal. You said that renewal would occur using DNS. Could you explain that a little more? Without opening UDP/TCP port 53, Let's encrypt won't be able to reach my NAS for DNS communication. If you are saying that Let's Encrypt will renew through the Synology DDNS service, how does the renewed certificate get to my NAS? Thanks for a great video, like all your videos.

I don't really get the difference for accessing the NAS via QucikConnect, private DDNS or this Synology DDNS. Where are the pros and cons? What is recommended to set up?

Hey, I want to change the static ip of my Synology network bond (to have it outside the DHCP range), but when I do that I can no longer access the NAS with my domain name. When I set the static ip back to what it was before it works again. Do you know why that could be?

Thank you for a great video and explanation. I am new to the whole DDNS remote access thing but I was wondering if it was possible to use the DDNS to access my office computer via the Synology VPN server and if there were any videos on how exactly to accomplish this. Remote working in these times is becoming normal and this solution would be great to be able to set up, without having a static IP address from my ISP.

I don’t know how Internet providers work overseas, but here in the land of Oz, by default most ISP’s provide IPV4 addresses as Carrier Grade NAT which cannot be accessed externally. In order to have remote access working you need to request a PUBLIC IP address.

I didn’t look at the other videos linked from this one, but it might also be worth talking about securing the NAS with Firewall rules once you expose it to the Internet.

Thank you. Instead of blanking out the form filling, it would be far better to use burner addresses so that people can see the exact criteria required. This would be far clearer to someone watching this (and other) instructionals.

Some of us are total newbies.
