There are two main types - heavy breeds which are used for meat or dual purpose meat and eggs. Light breeds are used for egg production as they don't have the musculature of the meat breeds. However the power to weight ratio of the heavy breeds is poor , and they can only fly up a few feet as mature birds. Extreme heavy breeds like Cornish Game (called Indian Game in the UK ) need low perches. Game breeds like Old English large fowl and bantams descend from stock used for cock fighting and hence are athletic and well able to perch in trees.
