Engaging engin break for emergency breaking is what my instructor teaching us, it makes around 2 meter stopping difference, compare to just pulling the cluch all the way.

Turning off the safety feature like ABS is the stupidest thing you can do to yourself and to your vehicle. No matter how you feel about it. And suggesting in a video to other/new drivers they should do it too is very dangerous, plus it is illegal. If there will be a accident in a future with possible damages (people's lives health and property) be assured that the insurance company will look into it and YOU and only YOU will pay the whole amount of the money for the damages - preventable with the safety features being turned on all the time especially on public roads.

Great video. As an ex pro boxer i get what you mean about knowing how to use both hands and legs simultaneously. Luckily for me boxing gave me 2 right hands. My left is just as good as my right and I also did some jeet kune do. So luckily i got 2 good legs. I had to kick with both legs just as good as my non dominant leg. BUT with that said I still have to practice more.

New rider(never been in a motorcycle) and I’ve been absolutely obsessed with the videos (most I watch 2-3times) - I feel confident in riding even though I’ll be buying my first bike on Friday (09/22/23) (Honda Grom Clone 125cc) I’m excited to purchase the app and study it to be a safe and knowledgable driver! Thanks for all the notes and help!

I agree with the progressive squeeze, but what about that rare event when 16 yo Suzy cellphone comes out in front of you from a side street or blows a stop sign? You don't have time to execute the progressive squeeze in a this SHTF scenario.

let's be honest: you either really devote your time to practice this gradually increasing speed, or ... at minimum you will be deadly stressed when emergency braking happens at high speed.

Yes, this is better to test the acceleration and braking to feel the limits of your vehicle or motorcyle and how to control for each scenarios :)

Good stuff, I may have to get that book. Enjoyable and straightforward video.
With good threshold braking I almost never engage abs in any vehicle unless I'm on sheer ice and the computer reads it. ahah it's kinda like a challenge because if the abs engages that's how you know you went over the pressure limit, and like you mentioned it also teaches you what pressure that is, and at what vehicle speed and braking rate. (abs is waaay more sensitive in winter conditions)

My bike has linked brakes. Given that, would you still be pressing down on the back brake?

Good advice, however I was taught not to pull in the clutch when emergency stopping right until the last instance as it disengages engine braking (meaning you only have 2 brakes opposed to 3). Something to think about.

One thing I can not wrap my head around: so in terms of the rear brake we are limited by the rear traction (that logically decreases as the weight transfers to the front). As the limiting factor is traction, not the rear brake - why make it more difficult by downshifting? The engine braking still is limited by the traction of the rear. So instead of trying to maximize the rear brake, why would you want to make it harder on yourself by both doing a much more dexterity demanding process and by creating a new problem out of thin air: by doing this you now have to balance your rear brake with the engine brake. Just because it's another source of declaration does not mean physics suddenly allow for greater traction on that rear.

Either this is just an admission of people underutilizating the rear brake or I'm missing something very obvious right now and make myself a fool. Still can't see how physics would allow any better results and the process is way more subtile for error while also making it near impossible to always use the optimal amount of rear brake as the amount of engine brake constantly changes (both for every shift and constantly while the revs fall).

What am I missing??

So why is engine braking used to supplement the rear brake when both are used to slow the rear tire?

If you can use engine braking to slow down faster you could also just use more rear brake because obviously you have the rear grip for it.

Your tires dictate how fast you can slow down, whether you use the brakes or engine braking doesn’t make a difference. If it does make a difference you can just use more rear brake, as the engine braking doesn’t magically give your rear tire more grip.

The only thing engine braking should be used for is to slow down normally to lessen brake wear, or to slow down when going down hill or from high speed to lessen brake fade. Neither apply at a 70mph stop unless you have really shitty brakes that fade very quickly.

I just finished the MSF course last week and sure enough, the instructor told us to never use the front brake during a turn. I think they over simplify it for beginners, but the better thing to do would be to have us practice what you taught in this video.

Fantastic video. Thank you so much. I have a question though: my bike (4-gear honda monkey 125) feels rather clunky and sometimes the lever's stuck if I downshift from going fast (65kmh or 40 mph) without blipping. Should I blip & downshift before applying the process you explain in here, or how should I do it?

While watching 1 thing came to my mind...I guess this does not aply with scooters especially maxi scooter like Burgman 650 or Honda Silverwing 600. They are so heavy at the back that increasing front brake pressure and adding rear one almost the same will have you 2 wheel on the road. I guess physics are little bit different with those big fat scooters which btw are fast as a rockets.

I'm confused about one thing: The engine braking. I use engine braking all the time in normal, sedate circumstances. But here you're talking about emergency braking. And you're saying not to use the rear brake except a little bit at the beginning. Engine breaking involves the rear wheel, just like rear braking. So why mess with engine braking in an emergency stop?

What if we leave the engine engage/clutch not activated, as we braking. Would we still get engine braking?

i think at a certain point, all the complex simultaenous movements and dexterity is surpassed by the simplicity of clutch in, pull brake lever, and down shift in case you have to let out the clutch to accelerate. its so simple that you can focus on brake feel, squeezing properly, and fully. like you said its all about the technique in the front brake, you cant do any of that while down shiftng (now you need a slipper clutch too btw), release rear brake and all that jazz. keep it simple, rear brakes is for stability, a light pressure all the way through and strong front brake pull with the clutch in if you need to at your discretion.

I am so used to always grabbing the clutch and then release the throttle inmedietely and then squeeze the front brake smoothly as you always says. Many instructors have told me that grabbing the clutch when braking is bad and possible dangerous but I have use it on actual emergency situations in real life successfully. So, now I am very confused with all this instructors tellling me I should never do it that way. So, my question, it is a no no grabbing the clutch whenever applying the brakes?

Watching with much attention to your vid I see, if not mistaken, that it is correct to simuntaniously apply the clutch meanwhile you are letting go of the throttle and start squeezing the brakes. So I have been doing it like you do and my instructors are telling me a different technique and saying that other technique with the clutch is wrong.

the clutch thing is what you do with manual transmission on the car everyday, and the brakes thing you do daily on a mechanical bike.

nothing new, especially if you ride daily on the track bike (yeah, fixie) without brakes. you just learn to predict.

A deer will require a pretty damn quick and unexpected stop from high speeds. They love to jump in front of you THEN stop and stare at you. Swerving around them is a risk as they can just as easily spook and dart another direction and again be in your way.

Was reminded couple days ago how rusty I was. 60 mph-light goes red and my brain is like EASY EASY EASY SMOOTH SMOOTH BARELY TOUCH PEDAL BALANCE BALANCE and once I stopped thinking oh shit I need more practice. 😂 it wasn’t an emergency stop just a quicker than normal. Should be automatic and relaxed.
