Military Vehicles (Romania): UAM Saur-1 8x8 Amphibious APC (Forţele Terestre Române)

The Saur-1 is a Romanian multi-role military vehicle. It is basically a modified B33 "Zimbru" 8x8 wheeled armored vehicle; a BTR-80 copy, that was initially called the Zimbru 2006, its code number represents its first year of development. In 2008, an improved version with a redesigned nose section, new engine, and bigger wheels was presented in a military exhibition in Bucharest, designated Saur-2. The Saur APCs are manufactured by Romania-based Uzina Automecanica Moreni (UAM), a subsidiary of the state-owned military hardware company ROMARM.

The hull of the Saur-1 is of all-welded steel. This provides the occupants with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters with the highest protection being given over the frontal arc. This gives the vehicle level 1 anti-mine and balistic protection. Installation of add-on armour kit can upgrade this protection to a level 2. Overall, the APC has a ballistic protection equivalent to STANAG 4569 Level 4 with under-wheel station offering Level 3a protection and the under-hull, Level 2b.

The vehicle is also fully amphibious and is equipped with 2 water jets for, providing up to 10 km/h propulsion on water. On land, a centrally mounted Cummins Euro 3 diesel engine developing 275 hp can propel the APC to a maximum speed of 100 km/h, with a maximum range of 700 km.

SAUR 1 is equipped to carry 12 personnel; 3 crew members consisting of the commander, driver, gunner, and nine soldiers. Its main armament is one 7,62 or 12,7 mm machine gun. It is still in prototype stage and it is not currently known if it is in service with the Romanian army or the army of any other country in the world.
