we have a Yamaha digital piano that supports midi. As a beginner kid would we need a drum machine /MIDI controller to start music production? Do we need a controller interface?

I like the iPad for music because I use a laptop for work and stuff which dampens my creative spirit, but you have articulated some of my worst fears about this platform...The biggest disappointment so far has been the poor performance of Beatmaker 3 (on a cheaper iPad 9.7). I got that to do everything CB3 can't do but it does not play well with others, even AUM and Audiobus. I always seem to be spending most of my time discovering the quirks of each app and what does NOT work before I can even begin to make a song, and at these times I feel like these apps are all teases for their more expensive desktop counterparts. (Stainb0rg) Recently I've been optimistically thinking these apps just need a more powerful iPad, but has that been your experience since you posted this video?

Ableton is really really really missing out in making an ios versino of ableton live. it'd be even crazier if they were to add support for vst and appstore synths

Hey guys, I'm on a quest to tackle one of the biggest issues plaguing mid-tier workstations - their CREPPY keybeds. I mean, seriously, how can the Fantom-0 and Modix+ cost a whopping 2000 USD and still come with these toy-like keys? Even a 200 USD MIDI controller has better keys than these supposedly high-end workstations! So, here's my plan: I'm gonna load up Sampletank or Korg Module on an iPhone (yep, not an iPad) and pair it up with a decent MIDI controller that actually has decent keys (Studiologic SL73 in my case). That way, I can enjoy the amazing sound of a modern workstation without having to put up with those terrible keybeds. Maybe it's a bit of a naive idea, but hey, given how terrible these keybeds are, I think it's definitely worth a shot. Let's see if we can create our workstations without breaking the bank!

The biggest issue, and this is as someone who’s been hooked to iOS since your videos running LK in AUM to the point I now run my full live show through an m2 pro is the lack of software that fully embraces how powerful the newer models are. AUM - no multi threading, BM3 - the best all rounder but still buggy, and not expecting an update anytime soon for multi threading, cubasis - about the only one to do multi threading and handle the extra RAM like it should but missing proper bussing and absolutely hateful to use. Loopy pro - best contender long term BUT still doing weird audio stuff in sequence mode and not quite there yet.

I love iOS production and I’m so invested in it but I find myself curating ideas in AUM to take to the next stage in BM3, then when I run out of ram (which with a multicore 16gb ram tablet is bloody CRIMINAL) I have to move to cubasis and that’s when the creativity dies because it’s a buggy heap of ass.

It’s all so close to being amazing and it’s soo frustrating, because a little investment would change it forever!

I've used Cubase on PC for years (since the late 90's). I tried Cubasis3 on my iPad Pro 2020 and ran into all sorts of problems. Missing notes, looping audio/midi becoming progressively glitchy etc. Really fundamental basic stuff that completely destroys ones ability to make music (or persevere with the difficulty of making music). I've tried so many times - and failed to get any kind of stability using the iPad eco system. I struggle to understand who can use the iPad in a truly 'professional' sense. I wouldn't stake my life or reputation on it.

Nothing is going on. I learned music production on iPad and it's been so difficult for me to transition to anything else, as much as I want to because Apple does not care about iPad. I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. The workflow of being able to touch everything has spoiled me from using m&k

I would never make full tracks using an iPad. It's only good for sketches or starting a beat whether it be drum pattern or melodies. Then I'll load the wav audio tracks into my main DAW which is basically sampling myself to create a full composed beat.

I had a similar story, I thought I was going all iPad in 2020. Got the FabFilters and the Cubasis, and yet I never actually finished a track. This was after a short music break I had after finishing an album and a few EPs with an off-the-shelf Costco PC and Abelton Push. iPad felt more like a music tool for idea creational, not the full music journey from idea to final master.

I use Cubasis 3 almost everyday with my M1. I can’t remember my last crash especially since about three updates ago. I only run Auv3s no IAA. I’ve been doing whole projects. Cubasis is definitely my DAW of choice, that being said there are features still needed.

I know I’m in the minority, but I don’t feel the need for a full DAW on iOS, I see it as a sort of futuristic touch screen dawless space. I only make music on iPad and I don’t ever feel limited. Of course I wouldn’t say no to the v collection or Aalto, but honestly I think iPad needs more weird touchy plugins if anything.

It’s a shame that Cubasis 3 is unstable for you. It’s been pretty good for me. I use Cubasis 3 with Loopy Pro as an Auv3 within it and it’s quite decent. There’s also Audio Evolution and N-Track if you haven’t tested those already. It’s too bad Beatmaker 3 hasn’t been update in ages. 😂

Hey Dylan, I had a similar journey. Tried really hard to make iPad my music production tool and now it's mostly been relegated to be a portable sound module for the MPC Live 2 I got after being frustrated by iPad DAWs. That's when things started to click together, really. DAW "lite" apps like AUM are perfect for this purpose and with the powerful MIDI Learn in AUM allows me to map most of my midi controller knobs to AUv3 synths. Other apps like Drambo and Groove Rider keep me on my toes, teaching me entirely new and alien workflows for producing music.

Inspired by the iPad as a sound module, I am in the process of doing something similar with my Steam Deck. I got Arturia V9 Collections (via Wine/Bottles + a little utility called yabridge that runs Windows VST inside Linux) and Bitwig running on it. Still haven't taken the time to make it work with my MPC Live 2 through midi in/out from my audio interface, but if all fails, I guess I could just dual boot Windows on it.

I guess that really proves your point that the #1 limiting factor of the iPad is its OS (and supporting apps). I wouldn't have been able to run Arturia V9 Collections if the Steam Deck ran its own little gimped proprietary OS instead of a full blown Linux distro (adapted for the Deck).

I mean at this point I should probably get a laptop instead, but since I spend 8-10 hours a day on a computer for work already, the last thing I want to do is to still sit at a computer even if Ableton Live is the GOAT DAW (for me).

You hit the nail on the head with Garageband. It's a great DAW but mixing leaves a lot to be desired. Also the fact that you can't easily bounce out stems to mix in a different app or on a desktop DAW is really frustrating. I know you can bring iPad Garageband projects into logic, but I wish they would just go ahead and put logic on that iPad already even if it isn't a full port. Even still between Garageband, beatmaker 3, and koala I'm able to make some decent stuff on my iPad, just annoying the platform as a whole isn't living up to it potential. Anyway great video man, cool to see you messing with iPad music again.

Stuff is dissapearing into the tablet/computer. A bit of a struggle since I love 🤡 gear 😎. Must admit that todays softsynths and DAW options are inpressive to say the least.

In the guitar world the same is happening with IR loadboxes and the lot. No need for an old fashioned amp though I still keep mine.

you make some good points, thanks.
I think if apple charged 100$ for a pro level daw on the ipad, people would buy it.
The platform is easily powerful enough and its portability and battery life is without competition.
Beatmaker 3 is what NI should have done with iMaschine but it seems development has basically stopped.
I think the business model for ipad daws just isn't there. Because apps are so cheap, nobody will invest in a good enough product and as a result the hardware power remains unused.
