I did not finish the video yet. But I would like to mention one very important thing ... especially with stone castles, it is much cheaper to add an additional floor. So the very first thing would be to move lord's private room one floor up.

The small castle is very similar to Fort Wellington, which was built in 1813-14 to guard Upper Canada from the United States. One feature I remember is that the large hall had hooks on the walls and posts to set up canvas dividers for the married soldiers and their families, which could be cleared back to a 'room at rest' to facilitate meals and assemblies. The unmarried soldiers were barracked in the top floor. The commander of the fort had the equivalent of apartments for his family's use, much as the lord's apartments.

Wouldnt the halfway mark at a minimum be the start of a new generation? I just find it hard to believe these were built that fast & the wealth to be able to fund the build i think would take time too.

It's funny if you know, just about last month ago I watched a video about the Skyrim Castle in wich one guy complained that lorewise it's totaly unrealistic for the Whiterun Castle wich is mainly made out of wood to be so basic and that she would never possible could have existed for hundred of years what the lore implies, so him here pretty much saying "Yeah they were verry basic and made out of wood" kind punches the video straight into it's face.

Will Link it if I find it again sadly the YT history search function is still brocken ... and since I watch these kind of videos on a daily basis ... not even my search history allows me to re-find it, so as said, if I stumble upon it once more ... (YT likes to offer one videos one allready watched, well atleast to me)

As I live in a small house heated by woodfires, I can testify out that smaller spaces with low ceilings heat up more quickly than a big, draughty hall, so if you need height for observational/defensive purposes, it makes sense to split the height with an extra floor so all the nice warm air from the hearth doesn't sit up near the ceiling where nobody benefits from it. Any bedrooms would have "underfloor heating" and be quite cozy, while the main living areas in the hall would warm up quickly. An arras (thick curtain) could be used to divide rooms temporarily and trap heat without the need for a wall - something else I know from experience does a great job for old-fashioned insulation and home heating.

the castle you show for "castles got bigger in the late middle ages" is in Germany, it is still owned by the family who built it and they are still counted as nobles. two of the three sides were started being built in the late 11th or 12th century, the late 80s or early 90s of that century. and the third side was begun in the 20s ish of the fallowing century so at the latest it was completed before the year 1250 that is the three buildings that form the wall around the central courtyard.

they have two unique things in the great hall, a symbol on the wall that stands for speak freely and i think its something connected to the political rule that allowed court jesters to burn anyone with jokes including the king and or queen with complete impunity and no chance of backlash. the second is inside the hall over the door so upon leaving everyone remembers that anything said in that room stays not only among family but also stays in that room and is not discussed again EVER anywhere outside of that room.

personally i think every family should have a room with those two rules!

Just a not in most cases the chapel if on the first floor had to extend out beyond the wall. In the middle age world no one was allowed to be above God. That is why a lot of the chapels were built on upper floors or as separate buildings.

There are many examples of 'fortified homes' where the animals and other necessities would be stored within the stone foundation and the living space was on the floor above. This is the main reason many Europeans refer to the first floor as the 'ground floor' and the floor above as the 'first floor'. This is a very good video especially since many castle videos deal with huge castles but not the small ones as shown.

Well at least my Castle that I have built in Conan exiles is medieval late accurate the only problem is it’s a fucking labyrinth it has 2 ballrooms A pub full on restaurant with dining area a total of 25 bedrooms five lounging areas a bank almost every bedroom has its own bathroom as there’s a window and I have detailed it to an extent where everything is furnished and what I mean is I have chamber pots on thrones or chairs and paintings are everywhere it looks like Hogwarts entering into certain rooms I have them themed by the animals on the wall or else it would look like I’m going insane I would never find my way around Not to mention I have a total of 15 guards a bunch of undead some golems is what was a well in the center of the castle asides from the magic stuff that I have in my castle it’s fit for more than just a king if what I’m seeing in this video is correct

That's crazy that anyone would think you'd have a throne room in your "run of the mill" castle. Do they not know who sits on a throne? A monarch! 99% of the people who owned castles were not monarchs!
