I noticed if you look at the genres all the winners have a pop leaning. Like hip-hop stuff is not just straight rap but has a lot of singing in it. Same for rock, heavier stuff like Metallica is not going to win, they all have a bit of a pop leaning.

its ridiculous how in the 2000s no rapper/hiphop artist won this award (except Outkast). Eminem, Jay-Z, Kanye, Nas, etc. those guys albums were so much fucking bigger than whatever the grammys decided to award

People in the comments need to understand the award is for the whole album, people getting mad saying others deserved it but I think majority of them were the right decisions

We can call folklore pop all we want bc it's labeled that, but NOTHING on their is pop to me 😭 Maybe The Last Great American Dynasty has a bit of a beat but everything else is strings and piano. Idk just seems weird it's considered indie AND pop.

I feel like many of the 90s picks were older folks "apologizing" to legends from their time who were snubbed in their prime. Clapton, Bennett, Dylan, Santana in '00, Steely Dan in '01. Quincy Jones was pretty damn old by the 90s too, though he did produce Thriller which won in the '80s so he was still pretty popular. All great records imo, but the Album of the Year should be reflective of the musical zeitgeist of the times. Ironically, Clapton (via Yardbirds) would have been a frontrunner in '66 and Dylan in '67 had it not been for the influence of that time's own older people pushing Sinatra during the height of 60s rock music; Steely Dan and Santana could both reasonably have won in the 70s if the Grammies had a policy of not picking the same artist multiple times in a few years like Wonder did in the 70s and Taylor is doing now.

It's just as preposterous for the 90s not to contain any Nirvana and only one Hip Hop album as it is for the 60s not to contain any Dylan and only one Rock album.
