What are your favourite Neo-Noir movies?
ОтветитьBeware! The Express might not for Homo none of the Imperial content unit.
ОтветитьTHE KILLER INSIDE ME
ОтветитьJohn Wick
ОтветитьYou covered some of my favorites; Chinatown, Taxi Driver, Blade Runner, Blue Velvet, Fargo, Se7en, The Usual Suspects, Memento, Mulholland Drive, Inception, Gone Girl.
* I’d add; Blowup, Blood Simple, Body Heat, Mona Lisa, 12 Monkeys, The Crying Game, Basic Instinct, Dark City, Fight Club, Lost Highway, The Departed, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Watchmen, Looper, Shutter Island and the new Nightmare Alley.
There is also comedy/neo noir; After Hours, The Big Lebowski, Inherent Vice.
Unlike other genres neo-noir never dies, it just evolves.
ОтветитьBrazil by Terry Gilliam is BY FAR the darkest Neo Noir Film ever made, IMHO.
ОтветитьOriginal Film Noir movies were basically cheaper Westerns set in the cities. Instead of exploring the wild nature of man out in the wild west, you're exploring the vicious and corrupt nature of man which is the same in the urban setting. Both also rely heavily on "on-location" shooting. Also, the "detective"figure (who doesn't have to be a real police detective) is the same character as the lone cowboy, except he wears a fadora instead of a cowboy hat and rides a Cadillac not a horse. Both protagonists exist outside of standard morality, instead following their own code. Both usually have a drinking problem, or addiction of some sort. And just as the cowboy rides into town alone and rides off at the end alone, the neo noir protagonist does the same.
ОтветитьGreat explanation, very poetic. Neo Noir movies are essentially noir films made in color, or since the advent of color. Instead of using light and darkness to create alarming visuals, they use jarring colors or neon light to achieve the same psychological effect
ОтветитьWhat about BOUND? :)
Ответитьsub spanish please
ОтветитьPark Chan Wooks "OldBoy" is either Neo-Noir or Noir, I'm no expert. I do know that, that movie was incredibly shocking and unforgettable. It wasn't edgelord bs or defined by it's shocking reveal. You feel what Dae su is going through. Hopeful and full of vengeance, then paranoid, manic, unsure as he falls down a rabbit hole. He's almost broken and you can feel everything before he's captivated and finds hope again... Maybe even love. Quickly it's all taken from him and revealed that all of the change he's gone through and the suffering he overcame to seek revenge... Was planned and the tables turn when he realizes he's on the other end of revenge. Then it feels like everything inside of you, through Dae su, is broken and everything you felt is wrong. It's almost impossible to reconcile, and it somehow goes further and it's a soul-stealing evil. I've never felt such despair, it's like losing all senses, and ability to talk, no arms, no legs and you're alone and immortal. He doesn't quit. He can't win but he refuses to lose and it's a very human ending. I probably butchered that but it's an experience and I've never been the same.
Ответитьbro literally spoiled every neonoir that exists
ОтветитьLove Noir Movies :)
ОтветитьNice video. Noir isn’t a term ‘we use retroactively’ though. It was coined in the 40s and the first book on ‘Film Noir’ was published in the 50s
ОтветитьMax Payne is very Noir
ОтветитьWow this is very well done! Great job!
Ответитьvery cool video
ОтветитьBullshit - Its not a Genre and never was. NOIR is a Style coupled with a dark PAN - GENERIC story
ОтветитьI guess Neo noir is one of my favorite genres without even realizing it since I've seen every single movie you discussed and I really don't watch many movies
ОтветитьEu simplesmente adoro esse subgênero. Se não me engano os primeiros filmes que assisti desse gênero foram os filmes do David Fincher
ОтветитьThank you for this inspirational essay. For anyone who loves this genre I would suggest some of my favs: Bladerunner, Delicatessen, Fallen Angels, Millenium Mambo, Chungking express, 2046, Sion Sono's work, Paprika, amongst others
Ответить“Fight Club”
ОтветитьPoint blank, the father of neo noir.
ОтветитьGone Girl is such a great neo-noir. One of my all-time favorite movies!
ОтветитьNão existe Neo-Noir
ОтветитьSuch an interesting video. I am subscribing it.
Ответитьculture will not die 🙌
ОтветитьBlade Runner, because I was at the idea of the future being a dark and gloomy place.
ОтветитьYou got it wrong with Memento. Leonard didn't kill his wife's killer because his wife didn't die in that attack. The story of how Sammy Jenkins killed his wife is actually the story of how Leonard killed his wife. Remember Teddy telling him that Jenkins didn't have a wife, and that his (Leonard's) wife had diabetes. The trauma from his condition and the guilt of killing his wife cause him to deteriorate so much that he didn't even remember that his wife had diabetes. Also, Nolan clever spells it out for you in that ending montage. Leonard replacing Jenkis in the institution and even a shot of Leonard and his wife in bed with the words "I did it, tattooed on his chest". That's the truth that disturbs him so much that he then plots to kill Teddy.
Ответить🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
ОтветитьEven though I consider myself to be a "horror junkie", I must say that neo-noir is THE most consistently high-quality AND enjoyable genre for me. But, it's a niche genre.
And my favorite films blend elements of psychological horror/thriller with a noirish aesthetic or mentality. BLUE VELVET, AMERICAN PSYCHO, CAPE FEAR '91, THE KILLER INSIDE ME and even the first SAW movie (parts of it) qualify as "psycho-noir".
Audience from Brazil here!
ОтветитьThis channel is highly underrated
ОтветитьThe Truth in Gone Girl was not that complicated. No more complicated than the lie that Amy Dunne pulled off. Nick was a victim of emotional and psychological abuse.
ОтветитьCould "They live" be considered in part to be a Neo-Noir?
ОтветитьI think Russian Brat and Brat 2 is one of the best neo - noir movies. It is portraying 90s Russian criminal life, classical morally confused protagonist and has some seriously melancholic aesthetics.
Ответитьyour videos are so well-written
ОтветитьOnly just found the channel and what have you done to me😂🤣. Binge Watch Alert. Finally a film channel with intellectualism on a Kafka scale with a prose worthy of Kerouac whilst sipping a nice cup of English tea. Respect from England ✌️
ОтветитьWhen it comes to the Neo-Noir Film Genre, I'm Enthusiastic. Blade Runner, Drive, The Dark Knight, Taxi Driver, Chinatown, The Silence of the Lambs, Prisoners, Mystic River, Memento, Memories of Murder, Mulholland Drive, Shutter Island. Thanks for this Brilliant Analysis of this Cinematic Genre which will Inspire so many Masterpieces to come.

The Dark Knight is not noir.
Ответить👍👍👍👍👍📽🎬
Ответитьya
ОтветитьNeo noir is my favorite genre actually
Ответитьnice job. /loved GALVESTON
ОтветитьBody Heat (1981): 'You're kind of stupid. I like that in a man.' Kathleen Turner to Bill Hurt. A key line in the movie exploring the dark heart of human soul or in other words a great noir movie.
ОтветитьUnder the Silver Lake
