If this spider monkey was stolen from the wild how did it end up in USA when it is a species from Latin America? Brought into USA illegally and then confiscated by law enforcement in USA? Very very sad for the baby monkey. There is no doubt the mother would have been killed by shooting as this is the only way to capture a baby primate from the wild. Kill the adult. I'm an Australian international volunteer with ARCAS in Guatemala. ARCAS is the premier centre of rescue/rehabilitation/return to the wild of mostly illegally trafficked wildlife species....hundreds of babies of multiple species being illegally trafficked mostly for the hideous pet trade. There is a high mortality rate of babies and as you mentioned they require expert veterinary medicine to restore their health to have a chance at life. At ARCAS which is a program under the auspices of veterinarians the spider monkey babies are raised for wild return in troupe families. This takes several years and the monkeys will be released as a troupe wearing tracking collars for 12 mths which fall off after 12 mths and monitored for survival and integration with wild populations. Spider monkeys are endangered in Guatemala. Thank you for being a kind, caring and compassionate person helping this little monkey to be safe and to thrive in happiness. How sad though it will never be able to live true to its own species in the wild. Cecile. Conservationist.
