Tbh on portability.

Good luck taking your $5000+ 3,5kg laptop to school or the office every day. High end Gaming laptops are only really logic for people who live in small apartements with no room for a giant pc or for children with rich divorsed parents

I think it would be worth adding a yearly cost based on energy usage and current prices. This would be a good comparison because the prices of the system are the same but the performance of the desktop easily outshines the laptop.

However, given the more power hungry desktop (and not forgetting monitor), a greater expenditure on energy would affect the 'total' cost and thus put a different perspective on the whole thing.

thanks , would you also review the stability of both systems in running long renderings, for example more than 48 hours , can it be harmful for laptop ?

2022 MSI Titan GT77 12UHS-064 (i9-12900HX, 64GB RAM, 4TB Platinum P41 NVMe SSD, RTX 3080Ti 16GB, 17.3" 4K UHD
This is the setup I went with. This laptops amazing. It’s an absolute beast. I can run mmorpgs like New World on full graphics and I’m topping out fps regularly. Not to mention I’ve never seen temps above 72-76 and that’s after 10-12 hours of gaming.

Ofcourse desktops perform better, but you can't deny how handy a laptop is, best choice I ever made was to buy a high end RTX 2070 laptop. I mainly use it connected to my tv. Also love the fact I can just take it and immediately connect it to my monitor while it stays on, or connect it to a beamer. Desktop is too clunky for me.

Cool comparison. To be truly equal though. You 'd also have to add a battery powersupply that could power the Desktop for as long as the laptop can run, this would have to include the monitor. We tend to forget the added benefit of a laptop battery saving us from productivity loss in cases of power outages. I think we could allow about 600 dollars for a small monitor with equivalent specs for the desktop.

I'm eagerly waiting for stuff like Thunderbolt 5 or or a PCIE4 slot so we can simply dock a laptop to a fullsize external GPU AND maybe a way to hook up the laptop cpu and RAM to an external cooler at the same time we dock so it could run at higher clocks. I think that's the way of the future.

Without the need of having a powerful GPU on board, you can save on space, costs, energy and cooling .

I still love desktop PCs for the customizability. But I also love laptops for their mobility. Each tools on their own.

Power Consumption per Frame Efficiency is definitely something to highlight in the future with every FPS benchmark result, just a little something to push companies for better efficiencies. Comparing the Power Draw against the FPS of Flight Simulator at 4K High Settings, you can see that the laptop destroys the desktop in PCpF Efficiency. 3090Ti Desktop needs 697W to render 81.21fps, so you get 0.12fps per 1W. The 3080Ti Laptop needs 258W to render 48.33fps, so you get 0.19fps per 1W. So if the Desktop would run at the same Power Consumption Level as the Laptop, 258W, then the Desktop would output 30.06fps while the Laptop runs at the reported 48.33fps.

I own the Titan GT77 and it's the best laptop I've ever used. I'd much prefer a desktop but I need the mobility, and the GT77 blows everything else out of the water. Aside from some fan noise, there's little noticeable lag while playing games on Ultra settings at 4k.

Yeah I built the Ryzen 9 3950 and the RTX3080 and recently bought the MSI Raider GE77 because I had to wait another month for the Titan.
The laptop is lovely but is slightly outperformed by the PC. Unlike my older MSI with the 6800HQ and GTX1060, the Raider does not get warm.
The Raider is excellent and I have been gaming on it together with a 27” monitor and corded RGB keyboard. With the lid closed does not get warm unlike the older MSI.
I did consider buiding the NUC Beast Canyon instead of the laptop but thought there is not much difference in cost.
I had been trialling the closed laptop with monitor and keyboard on the older MSI but it clearly struggled.

This was really very interesting. I am thinking of getting a gaming rig, not a hardcore, and the choices are mostly laptop around 11800h/5800hs/6800h with 3070/Ti (~140watss) or desktop for the same price which can get me a little better processor and perhaps 3080 10GB. For me the issue is the noise level predominantly when lying and working as a workstation in the background. On laptops it auto manages and even can put on silent while not sure how desktop will perform. Portability not required. Any tips on this regards?

It would have been way more reasonable to appreciate the power output effect, on the same 3080 Ti GPU on both. Although you mentioned why you are comparing 3090 Ti with 3080 Ti laptop GPU, comparing it still seems unfair. Thanks anyway!

This might be a dumb question but I’m not a gamer and don’t know anything about gaming computers. I’m looking for one because I learned about city skylines a few weeks ago.….there are hundreds of gaming laptops on the market with the same or similar specs and components inside. So why would the brand name on the outside cover matter? I hear many good things about Lenovo but why?

Why would you use a case on Desktop that doesn't have great cooling. There is a reason so many new cases have front air vents pulling air in.

I think its incredible that a Laptop with about 1/3rd the the power consumption gets as close to the desktop as it does. Even if the desktop drew 2x the power the Laptop is using, its not delivering a 200% performance boost - at most you get around a 70% boost.

I guess it also depends on screen size, resolution of screen etc as a 'small' laptop screen has much smaller pixels than a large desktop monitor at the same resolution. So 1080p upscaled to 4k for example will be more noticeable on the larger screen. You can get remarkably similar looking games on smaller, lower resolution screens as the Switch proves - 1:1 720p on its 'small' screen can look better/sharper than 1080p on a large 4k TV in docked mode.

Of course, if RAW performance matters most to you, then the best option is always going to be 'desktop', but that comes with its own limitations too. A Laptop may well be a 'better' option for some and the fact that you can get a minimum of 60fps in most modern games with relative ease and at 'HD+' resolutions when most gaming Laptops come with 1080p screens for 'high' refresh rates, then do you really need '4k Ultra visual settings on a relatively small screen? On a Desktop set-up, with 28"+ 4k screen, then it makes more sense, but a 15" 1080p Laptop doesn't need to hit 1440p, let alone 4k...

i've never had a good experience with a gaming laptop. always stutters or crashes or errors or nonsense issues that never happen on my desktop

To be fair, gaming laptops of today are good enough as desktop replacements.
Another major perk of laptops is placement, not just the obvious in energy savings and portability, especially if space to hold a desktop is hugely limited and not ideal to fit something big without cluttering the desk, then you can consider that and just add a mouse and you're good to go for a clean setup. Think of it as a smaller All-in-One computer that's smaller than a typical all-in-one desktop.
