A dirtier DL650...450lb curb, with more travel and clearance.

KLX450 and KLX650 with EFI.

WR450R/X.

EFI, E-start, street-legal XR650R, and a CRF450L with the X motor and passenger pegs.

DR650 with fully-adjustable suspension (ala DR-Z400S) and a wide-ratio, billet-geared 6spd. Many people would also like EFI (ala Grizzly 700?) and ABS, as mandatory in Europe. I could happily continue with a carb though. If Suzuki could make that bike with same frame and similar engine, for $7500 MSRP or less, at under 380lb curb, they'd continue selling DR650s for years to come. We could still strip them to under 330lb curb, and boost power to 55+WHP.

The DR-Z400S could get EFI, ABS, and wide-ratio 6spd.

You talk about the new KLR, how about the replacement to the KLX250 - Kawasaki built the KLX230 saying it is built from the ground up as a Trail bike but they put telescopic forks on and made the suspension too soft, Iowned the 2018 model and tried the 230, it’s okay but nothing special

Dual sport kit for the RMX450Z. Has EFI and a wide ratio 5 speed. larger fuel tank would be nice also.

I think Kawasaki fired its R&D team years ago tbh. The world would love an up engined Versys 650, i.e. a 750 or 800, as well as a Versys X400, and that's not mentioning a modern KLR 650 with more power than KTM's 390 Adventure. The only reason they don't do any real development I can think of is that they earn the vast majority of their cash in poorer countries where a $1000 increase means losing a sale to one of the other Japanese makers.

Right now there are too many pigs out there (heavy bikes). The KLR650 is a perfect example at over 400lbs. The 20 year old DRZ400 is still the best dual sport available, and not because it is that great (it's not). But no one else makes a serious dual sport. (yes, the ktm, beta, etc are nice, but they are street legal dirt bikes).

I would love the idea of a KTM 450, or even better the 250/300 2-stroke, road-legal, certified for passenger, the gearbox with 6th gear, with more road-oriented ratio, lower seat, and higher maintenance interval. It will be a success, so many guys are waiting for a bike not too demanding, and easy to use on the road to commute to the track.

I agree the DRZ needs a 6th gear. I seldom ride highway with my DRZ, but when I do I am always looking for one more gear.
Owning many motorcycles if I could only keep one it would be the DRZ. The DRZ is not the best in anything but it is good enough at everything.

Keep in mind that Europe is heavily deprived of good choices. While you might see the same happening with DRZ soon in your neck of the woods, we were unable to get DRZ, DR, XL, KLR or even WR for ages. The only two bikes that fit the bill at the moment are CRF300L (and Rally) and the KTM/Husky (690/701). With that being said, despite the lack of 6th and EFI, we would cherish a newer DRZ as if it's a Dakar rally bike... :D

I like new KLR650
That being said I’d like to see a Kawasaki Versys X650 or X700. Keep is somewhat simple with 1 or 2 ride modes, switchable ABS, cruise control, 21” front/18” rear tubeless spoked wheels and upgraded suspension.
They won’t because it’ll compete directly with the KLR, but I’d be all over that bike!!

@1dancier - 05.04.2021 00:58

Kawasaki nailed it, why compete with the pack when they've got a winner for the adventure market. If people want something with more power buy the T7 or 890 etc. The ultimate dual sport with long service intervals won't be coming from Europe. KTM's dealer network in Europe is too strong, riders don't have to go to far to find a service centre. Seems like the only hope in Oz for a modern dual sport is the CRF300L, pity the KLX300 isn't coming to our shores, not yet anyway.

On the DR650/DRZ400 we also need ABS to meet NZ & probably Australian standards to carry on selling them. Like you i wish they would also address suspension and that seat. EFI is also a must but the 6 speed is more of a want to drag it out of the 90's. I think an update on the DR650 dash is also overdue, at least give us a Rev counter.

I have a 2019 Africa Twin Adventure Sports. About the only complaint I have about it is the weight. I'd like to see an 800 cc Africa Twin.

I had a DR-Z400 that I was turning into a light adventure bike before it was stolen. It needs a fairing, because holding onto the handlebars at highway speeds can be exhausting. It needs EFI. Mine was lean at sea level, but couldn't maintain highway speeds above about 5000 feet. It needs either a six-speed gearbox or a wide ratio gearbox. Handling at high speeds was sensitive to tire pressure. It would develop a 2 Hz oscillation above 70 mph. Adjusting pre-load on the rear shock was a project unto itself.

The EFI and the gearbox are the big needs for the DRZ. The DRZ is a street legal dirt bike, so I would hate to have Suzuki hurt its off-road abilities by taming its street behavior. You can get windscreens or a fairing for it, you can adjust the rear shock with a screwdriver and a rock, and you can limit your speed on the highway.

I have to disagree with this. Every time the manufacturers make unicorn style bikes (non are perfect of course) they don't sell well. KTM 950 Super Enduro, BMW HP-2 Enduro, BMW G650 xCountry, CCM GP450 adventure, Husqvaran TE610/TE630 and now the 701 LR (long range). The Versys and the CB500 are just pure commuter bikes not even touring bikes let alone adventure bikes. As for the KLR I can't imagine anyone wanting it considering it is similar weight and less powerful than much more capable motorcycles in the adventure category.

Careful with that xtz250 teneré picture on the thumbnail. You are one step away from summoning the brazilian part of the internet on the comment session.

Anyways, I think yamaha was keen on a 320 teneré, but changed mind after they saw the versys 300 sales numbers.

If a teneré 320 comes and they don't give it a cross plane crank or something to reeeealy boost low end torque it is good to fail as well.

The mt03 is more a baby xj6 then anything. Way too hi-revving.

Despite the fact that most of us 'adventurers' would probably be satisfied with 500cc, making motorcycles part of the solution to saving the planet, we are being hit with the same big stick by the legislators. This results in the safety and emissions devices that motorcycles neither need nor want, I for one can't see myself ever buying a new bike again. All the improvements you describe come at the cost of adding all this paraphernalia to a new model, so the original will remain the best we'll ever have I fear. I'm building to my own requirements, and isn't going to be expensive. Oh, by the way, have you all watched 'The last motorcycle on Earth' ? (Amazon video)

I am astounded that Yamaha have not included the excellent MT09 engine into a dual sport adventure bike. There are videos getting around of someone that has modified an MT09 into one.
The Stock MT09 already has the correct geometry, so off-road suspension and wheels, and bashplate protection are pretty much all it needs.
