Feeling good about helping others makes me feel guilty in a way. I feel like I shouldnt be helping others because it makes me feel good, but because it makes them feel good. So when I start to feel good about it, I worry that Im doing things for the wrong reasons.

When I was 11 or 12 years old, I wanted to earn money and start my life journey of becoming rich. My informally educated loving dad encouraged me to get a paper route. All the nearby routes were already taken by older kids, so he told me to put in applications at the local newspaper office that was a few miles from our home. When one of the routes opened up, this would give me a chance to get it.

He told me to be persistent and go back regularly reapplying. As a young boy, I spent many hours daydreaming about my future as I walked downtown to the newspaper office to fill out applications.

When I was 13 ½ we got a phone call from Jake Logan. He managed the paperboys for the newspaper. When he came to our house to interview me, he said he found so many applications from me that I was the first applicant he was interviewing for a route that was opening up. He gave me the route without even interviewing the other applicants!

During the week I would deliver the papers on my bike. On cold dark Sunday mornings, my dad would get up with me and drive me around my four mile route. My dad worked very hard five or six days a week, standing at and operating a manufacturing machine. He was probably very tired on Sunday mornings, but supporting, helping and encouraging me and his family was his lifelong purpose. I hope I gave him a sense of pride as he drove around my route, in his cold car folding my newspapers and watching his young son run from house to house delivering newspapers.

I was driving down the far reaches of the back roads of Montana on a service call. I saw this old truck cockeyed in the middle of the road. The closer I got I realized it was a 60 year old plus Native American male attempting to load a white tail deer into his truck, he had just shot and cleaned it, he couldn't get it over the open tailgate. I stopped and helped load this nice buck. He was super grateful. The lady on my next service call was wandering around her house wondering what the strong smell was. It was the musk from that rutting buck I'd helped load. I repaired her washer and she was super grateful that the smell was on me and her washer was operating perfectly!! Lol!!!! They stink something fierce when they are in breading mode. 😂😂

Curious as to why instead of “finding a story” one would not just create as many stories every day as opportunities come up (opportunities to perform kindnesses for others including humans, animals, even trees/plants)
The kindnesses may seem rather small, and it is important to realise that if each of us were to share what we easily can, the world would be a very different place.
Each of us has the ability to make another’s day a little/a lot better and many people will attest to the fact that one always receives more than what one has given, a miraculous side effect of giving without expectation. I observe one gets better at noticing these opportunities with practice.
Try it out people, it will change your life
I have a friend who has been paralysed from the neck down for over 25years. She requires 24/7 care as is unable to do anything other than chew, blink and talk ( with difficulty at times as her lung function is compromised and declining due to the paralysis)
She absolutely delights in finding ways to help others, despite her physical conditions and woefully inadequate income. She is inspirational and one of the happiest people I have ever known.

“Oh it is wonderful that he would care for me enough to die for me. Oh it is wonderful! Wonderful to me.”
I can’t help but think he is describing exactly what we do in sacrament meeting. The deep breathing that happens when we sing the sacrament hymn, the meditation that happens when we focus on the meaning of the words in the story and the word for word sacrament prayer every week followed by the silence and meditation time for reflection while we wait for the bread and water to be passed to the whole congregation.
This came to me at a time when I’m doubting my faith but this reminds me of the many times when I’ve witnessed science finally catches up with what God already has instituted for us. The more educated we become the more agnostic we become. I’ve come close to even calling myself atheist but I’ve realized I’m not anti theology and I find it hard to align myself with those who are. My struggle is the more I learn the more it disproves what I thought I believed, casting a shadow of doubt with anachronisms or that Gods tools (messengers) were far from perfect.
God does not fail and When God set out to create a world that he could send his children to to be tested on their faith he didn’t forget to take the answer sheet off of the projector screen -that would negate the purpose of the test. In his mercy he left ways for us to earnestly find reason to doubt so that he could justify saving us in our shortcomings.
I want to express my gratitude for a Father in Heaven who loves us enough to create a way for us to have this experience and still return back to him.

If remembering an instance of someone being genuinely grateful to us works wonders for us, maybe it would be even better to have a practice of creating new instances? :) Do something nice for other people as often as opportunity arises? Receive gratitude in real time.
Maybe banally analogous to: preparing a frozen broccoli is good for you, but buying a fresh one is even better?
I knew helping people made me feel good, and was always recommending that practice to others, so now I know there's the science to support that! ;) Kidding, I understand that the research mentioned in the podcast did not specifically study the effects of receiving gratitude in real time. :) I am just personally assuming receiving gratitude in real time works similarly, and probably more potently. Just an assumption.
I would still wholeheartedly recommend helping others and doing random acts of kindness. 😊

Thank you for your work, research, dedication, and incredibly useful information with which you enrich our lives.

Due to my religious background I adopted a gratitude practice or understood that as important in my overall health a long time ago. It is nice though to see that science now is giving us a very "biophysical" reason to practice that even more. BTW, one day to Thanksgiving... I can definitely be thankful for you Dr. Huberman. 🥰

Gratitude is not a man-made theory that you can attribute to scientific discovery. Just because scientists happen to come across some scans, where the brain lights up when they perform certain rituals, does not mean that science has discovered gratitude. Gratitude began with the act of creation and the most influential human, to ever live on the Earth, not only explained gratitude but lived it. It’s that example that allows humanity, even without the knowledge of the spect scans, to exercise gratitude without hypocrisy. Matthew 6:38 - “Practice, giving, and people will give to you. They will pour into your laps a fine measure, pressed down, shaken together, and overflowing. For the measure that you were measuring out, they will measure out to you in return.” Acts 20:35 - “there is more happiness in giving than there is in receiving,”
Give credit where credit is due. I haven’t completely finished listening to the discourse, so I’m not too sure if you gave credit appropriately but so far, halfway through, you keep talking about how science has made all these discoveries about gratitude even dismissing techniques people use in general to display gratitude, so how can I finish listening to it? I know that many of the principles in the Bible go without scientific explanation and learning about how our bodies function is very interesting. I appreciate that information, it’s unfortunate that it came without historical reference and a lot of unnecessary name dropping. Maybe in the science community, that’s expected of you. Within that community, there is a lot of need for self praise and people want to attach their name to something because it contributes to their career. However, for a subject like this, that approach doesn’t make much sense.

QUESTION: I love the podcast, and the research behind gratitude the way you present it. But you also mention testing on animals to evoke emotions in them (as part of some studies)... why would we still need to do that? Is research really not advanced enough in this area to do non-invasive tests with human beings, who would participate on voluntary basis? If you could tell me that those poor mice and other animals are actually not abused, then I think that would become my 'gratitude story' that I would start using to activate my circuitry!

I've listened to this twice. It occurred to me that when we list things we're grateful for (which I've done a lot of), the focus is primarily on what others do for 'me' ~ I'm more on the receiving end. This practise hasn't been without positive effect, especially at certain times. However, with Andrew's perspective and practise described so well, the focus is on the loop between me having given of myself / helping others in a way that would occasionally elicit gratefulness for my actions (not TO receive thanks necessarily), and discovering through their expressing gratefulness to me, that my action really made a difference to another's well-being. It's so interpersonal of a loop, and it deepens our awareness of our worth amongst our fellow humans, which ultimately generates a sense of belonging and of purpose. It's more than 'me' simply receiving, and noting it on paper. It's me giving as a participant in loving others, and then at times receiving genuinely felt and expressed gratitude that reinforces the value of my serving, helping, encouraging others. It seems all the richer the way Andrew presents it here. Very grateful for this!

Thank thank you for pulling all the research together! I have been doing this with my clients based on somatic practices on the vagus nerve, Heart maths institute and pure intuition! You really are a gem to the world.

Two extra behavioural cues that puts me and my clients into flow of gratitude in moments of stress : I always put my hand on my heart, while I rehearse. This tells my nervous to relax and feel into gratitude. When challenged, hand automatically on the heart and physically sigh (2) music. Superhighway to gratitude

I’m adding story into the session, but every day I sit in devotion and say: “don’t move until you’re moved “ and it’s like a heart-gasm.. but it’s from pure gratitude and I thought it was due to elevation of feelings, and yes it is! ❤thank you again! Nila
