Thank you for the insight, I'm trying to decide on what my path should be. Definitely answered my question as far as the "types" of paganism. However I would also like a better understanding and where I should start as a beginner to paganism and what I should read or listen too if you have any recommendations that would greatly appreciated. To my knowledge from what I've read and correct me if I'm wrong, there are some types of paganism that you can't or are not supposed to self induct yourself as you have to be apart of community with rank and structure and "earn your place" for lack of a better term, and those in which you can self induct. I am Eclectic pagan. when looking at Norse gods I only worship Lady Hel, Idunn and Tyr. So almost no Aesir considering Tyr is Vanir and Idunn was said to be a Elf in a eddic poem. So I think i'll keep calling myself eclectic.

For roughly 40 years I've struggled to come up with some type of heathen belief system. I don't necessarily feel drawn to any specific ones because of their shortcomings for me particularly. Example, Wicca is either too structured and made up or its too New Age. I feel pretty certain my ancient ancestors weren't into chakras and reiki. I feel like the Norse/ Viking or Germanic systems are too testosterone focused for me.
Very difficult to reconstruct a system that we know nothing about because written language didn't exist at the time. Im talking about the sort of clan of the cave bear type of religion in a way.
So I'm on a sort of mission to construct something thats just for me.

I always find it funny when people argue about their invisible friends. When you need medicine you take it. You need spiritually or a crutch for your positive actions - take it . Whatever name you give it.

As a swede I wonder why americans use the word Asatru and not the scandinavian word Asatro. The word asatro in swedish consists of 2 words Asa wich is the name of the younger scandinaviansgods and the word tro wich is the swedish word for belief in, and religion can use the word tro because it simply means belief, it doesnt even exclusively mean religion it can be use in any meaning where you would use the term believ.. Like do you believe in the possibility in peace on earth or any thing like that.. But tru is a word we dont use si i dont understnad why americans replace the word tro with the word tru.. Im guessing because scandinavians pronounce tro more similar to how a english speaking person would pronounce tru... I’m glad to see Norse religions and also Druidism become more prevalent in Europe (and the US). These religions, not Christianity, are part of the original culture of Europe. I’m of Irish descent so would like to learn more about Druidism. But I know there’s not really a written record of ancient Druids’ beliefs, unfortunately

I've started using the term atheistic heathen. I use it like others use "cultural Christian" or "non practicing Jew."
Heathen: The stories, the Rituals, The community, These things all mean something to me and have a place in my life.
Atheist: I don't believe the Gods are looking down taking note on each Sacrifice I make and in who's name. Odin himself will not come to me in disguise and give me some great wisdom.
It's also fun watching people try to pick apart what I mean by it.

I have been using the term Asatru but thanks for the video explaining the term! I’ll start referring my faith as Norse pagan

I usually use the term Heathen myself which to me, encompasses all variations as well as other Germanic pagan paths. I'll simplify it to Norse Pagan if talking to someone with no knowledge, like the occasional Christian missionaries that relentlessly knock on doors. If someone with knowledge of Heathenism wants to narrow it down then I'll use Asatru, referring to it's Icelandic (non-racist) branch which is also followed here in the UK.

Now the AFA has recently tried to expand to the UK unfortunately but pagan community, not just heathens, have collectively got their planned ritual stopped. Sadly that won't be their last attempt but we'll keep the pressure on until they get the hint.

I’m an American and I use Jackson Crawford’s translation of the Poetic Edda as my religious text. I just tell people I am Norse and if they need to know my political stance also, I say traditional Norse. Some people worship Loki, I honor the ALLFATHER.

What are your thoughts about the Asatru alliance? Which is not the same as the AFA

I remember soon after i socially opened up about believing in the norse dieties, some lil old lady called me a heathen. I just chuckled and kept walking. I normally just say im a Norse pagan. If people ask what i mean, i tell them im a pagan that believes in the norse gods and goddesses, not wicca or other pagan religions

My opinion is that there’s not really enough reliable historical evidence to do a really solid reconstruction, even if the sources we do have are invaluable. Why would I only talk to translations of dusty manuscripts and not talk to the living Gods and wights themselves for guidance?

I'd never heard that atheists referring to themselves as heathens might be problematic. I'll stop doing so, but I used the term that way mostly as a recognition of our united fight to believe whatever we want or nothing at all. But then seeing how other online atheists act, I can see why that might not be the message you'd receive 😅 Respectfully, I'll quit using it.

First time on your channel. I love the term Norse Polytheist! I use Asatru because it feels because it feels more rooted in the cultures surrounding Norse Paganism. Where Heathen and Norse Pagan feel like us using terms that were forced on us by Christians in a negative light (not sure if that quite makes sense). I'm still a novice when it comes to all this though, and I appreciate your take on this. Definitely came away from this video with a much more positive view of Norse Pagan and Heathen as terms. I very much think I will start using Norse Polytheist though! (Oh, and I subscribed! Excited to watch more of your videos).

Everyone is free to believe in what he wants or needs to believe if it doesn't hurt others religious freedom is an important part of democracy so I have the outmost respect for every religious person and I must say I find old norse traditions and spirituality (not religion) fascinating but I wonder what sense can have to change a religion for another. it does make such a difference? you are believing in something or better someone or many entities of which existence you have no proof anyway no matter what names these entities have Odin or Freja or God or Zeus and so on.

Idk man, I guess I don't know everything about the AFA, but if they want to be exclusive to those they see as their kinfolk, well that's an extremely important aspect of all European folk religion and I don't see anything wrong with that.
