rivers only split at a delta where the river meets the sea (or a large lake) and that is in a small spreading out fashion in many little streams before reaching the coast that is ever-changing.
rivers will never split onto multiple sub rivers and go different ways.

Today there are many and different tools for mapping. And yet I always come back to this video for inspirations and explanations and my best maps still come from GIMP.
Thanks for this video, put me in the right direction back in the days.

Only thing that is missing (unless it's in another tutorial of course), is how to customize the Measure Units.
The Measure Tool is incredibly useful not just while drawing the map but also to keep track of the PC's strategic movement.

this is good but you should use a solid brush so you dont get those little traces of shading from where your deleted lines were

I tried a dozen of times, and it didn't work...

I'm using version 2.14, and the different layout is a bit of a mess ... my biggest problem is when it comes to the "invert" part, where nothing works like what you show in the video, which is frustating af...

I will end up giving up my D&D maps on GIMP and will end up buying Inkarnate or Wonderdraft

Bit late I know but when I delete the white it also deletes the white of the landmass...bloody maddening.

Hey, I've been having a problem with the brushes, where the shadows of the various icons appear on GIMP as solid colour. Do you have any idea why this might be happening or how to fix it? Should I just reinstall the brushes?

Script-fu link is dead, the Script-Fu I found in the net is organised differently and can't be used interchangably with your solution. Bummer.
Other than that, great tutorial, just saved my ass with an on-going builder game

This is a helpful guide! I used to use Fractal Mapper and was apprehensive about making a map from scratch, but this video helps with that. I made my first map and now I'll never use anything like Fractal mapper again.
