In many respects the movie Forrest Gump was based on Homer Simpson, a man who's similar ability to fail upwards and have all these adventures (and advantages) as perfectly depicted in the Frank Grimes episode.

Of course the movie glosses over the civil rights movement - Zemeckis is a huge racist. Just look at how race is treated in Back to the Future 1 and 2. He explicitly hates black people (and Arabs).

A large reason that 90s films focus on politics (political entities, operations etc) is that with the downfall of the Soviet Union, the largest external threat was basically gone. I believe this pushed a lot of people to turn their focus to things happening inside the country vs outside.

Here in Florida and and Texas (and others) there’s a seafood restaurants called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. I’m not sure how they managed to acquire the name but the food is damn good

I found this film to be a lazy and cowardly way to say a bit about a lot of events and themes in recent American history. A handicapped protagonist who bumbles his way through life, not fully understanding everything, and yet, finds himself rubbing up against several major touchstones and famous people while also doing very well for himself, generally. The premise is touching and novel, I guess, but is utterly ridiculous. I think the film is well made and acted, but I didn't care for it.

Forrest Gump is a terrible movie that tells you being dumb and shutting up is the only way to be successful. Otherwise you get your legs blown off or you get AIDS. I hated this in 1994 and even more so in 2024. They changed the novel to market it to conservatives and dumb people. It succeeded and the dumbest people think it's brilliant and their favorite movie. Gross. Sad.

I think Forrest Gump shares a lot of themes with Cast Away, another Zemeckis/Hanks collaboration, in that it depicts an incredibly unpredictable world that is both cruel and beautiful, and ultimately the only thing you have control over is the point of view you choose to view it from.

This movie is one of the few that shows a positive ending for veterans that have experienced extreme ptsd.

I hate this film so tho i wish i liked it more. The general idea i like but Zemeckis' take on the book turns it into a reactionary screed.

"Forrest Gump" got me through some hard times in the 90s. I never saw it as "conservative". I saw it as the story of a man who found success and fulfillment in a world where that never should have been possible.

You can watch an Oliver Stone film if you want a scathing critique of America. Forrest Gump is supposed to be a feel good film.
