Hi! I’ve been trying to get the right pixels for an art work I did on procreate (the original canvas was 1443 x 1003 and another of 1951 x 1298) Ive tried different sizes and also brought the dpi down to 72 as a jpeg but it still won’t look good on Instagram. I also tried with lower pixels such as 911 x 608 but no results. Any advice from the masters ?

I dont understand why you didnt use a png at 1080 on the second render. you just said that you didnt want instagram to have to process a complicated file format? please explain better why the jpg was a superior choice to the png @ 1080 if there is a technical explanation. I noticed you didnt compare the 1080 png to jpg but was that something you observed was better or worse during some other tests you didnt film?

baseline optimized removes ''unwanted'' colors, but I don't know if it counters with the sharpness of the image, I guess you don't want to remove colors.. but if you don't remove them, the image has more of a ''smudgy'' effect due to more color variations = making the compressed image look worse by less sharpness. I apologize if I confused anyone :)

When you experiment, you need to change only 1 variable at a time so you can tell what actually makes the difference. Changing to 1080p and JPEG at the same time, or double-size and medium quality, muddies the waters. (Still, the video helps narrow things down for people.)

Honestly I thought I'm the only one who has dummy art account & constantly label them with jpeg 50%, png 24 etc. Relieved that doing this is not sheer madness rather a recommendation from this artist. I spend days doing my bg arts so I get frustrated if it gets pixelated

i made a dummy account some weeks ago, but i just noticed that on my dummy account the image quality is good, while on my main account it uploads with low quality, kind of pixelated.
Does anyone know why this happen?

Cool tips @ergojosh! ... I'm also finding that the image brightness, contrast, and saturation are LESS on the uploaded image, anyone else finding this, and overcooking the image prior to upload to compensate?

so i tried to upload a digital drawing of mine as a PFP (profile pic) on insta
and i SUFFERED until i figured it out so, here's everything that i did
:
i had a 3000 x 3500 px file.
i cropped it to be a square, so 3000 x 3000.
i resized it in photoshop so many times i had 10 different sizes at one point
instagram pfp size is 180 x 180 px
i cried
dis is what worked best
i clicked image size, wrote 180 x 180 px, then chose smooth gradients on options (the option ps automatically recommends for shrinking a pic looked so bad and pixely)
i tried saving it as an jpg first, but png looked better in the end
to make sure i place it right, from my pc i sent the 180 x 180 png to a friend(this is where a dummy account would come in handy)
then i took my phone, got into the convo with the friend i sent the pic to and saved it to my phone ( don't screenshot it or anything or you're going to cry)
then i went to change my pfp and i chose a good enough placement, i zoomed in a little and it didn't make a difference in the end so that's good
i raised up the contrast to 30 on instagram edit so it looked more clear
there u go

WORST CASE SCENARIO
make it monochromatic and it won't look as bad, but try not to use the instagram filters to make it black and white, try to do it in the program you're working with, zoom out of it abd optimize it to have a clean contrast, so that the image is relatively easy to understand

AAAAND it's not going to be perfect if your file is a big file like mine was
i recommend trying to work as small as possible and with relatively simple details
when you shrink the image you're going to lose details no matter what, even worse, some details that made sense to add on the big file, will just end up making your small picture muddy or have a weird contrast
if you wanna add noise or texture or rgb shift to your piece i recommend doing that after you shrink it, or the texture will make it muddy and hard to look at or understand whats going on

OK DAS IT <3
