How to get a good start in naked brutality (Rimworld)

Good tips, man. I have 1000+ hours of gameplay, and still learned a couple of things from your vid. Keep up the good work! :)

I didn't think I needed a trap so early. 3 hours in, my colony was about to blossom into something good. Then a single, naked, one legged, knife wielding pirate killed everyone. Rimworld often seems to beat the odds against me.
