I don't understand why x of i minus x bar gets squared instead of using absolute value. Wouldn't absolute value work the same way?

Mr. Jayson, something doesn't add up to me. Why was it chosen to be squared to eliminate the negativity rather than absolute value could have been taken? In addition, would you please tell me why the sample variance has -1 in the denominator while the population variance doesn't?

Population variance = E[(xi-U(miu)2]/N
but in example he has used xbar which is a sample mean, my view

If I pull a card to try for the ace of spades (1/52 chance) and I win $500 each time I do, and $0 all the other times, how do I calculate the variance? each pull would be 1/52 (not 1/52 then 1/51 then 1/50...)
