Gen Xers... do you not REMEMBER 90% of the crappy 2600 games? Just a box dodging other boxes and you'd need the manual to even know what was going on.
Sure, its not a great game and it has a lot of problems. But it did have a lot of good ideas and was pretty impressive given the insanely small timeline HSW had to work on it. The graphics were decent, there was a multi-world map and a basic collection quest kinda reminiscent of Superman for the 2600.
I don't know if I feel better or worse that video game developer crunch has always been in the industry...

Atari got greedy because of the upcoming Christmas holiday season, and they wanted the game in stores by then because it would be a cash cow for them therefore, the short 5 week development period. I played this game quite a bit back then. It had some pesky issues like when you would elevate to get out of a pit, then you would try to move away from it only to fall back in it. For people to say this game caused Atari to crash is not fair though, there were just too many video games made for the 2600 system which kind of watered it down so to speak. I have great memories of playing games on that system, the perfect rainy day activity back then.

I loved, but never could solve it.
The ET game was pretty bad.

Ответить52 year old 1970’s child here. I had this game on Atari 2600. Yeah it was pretty bad 😂. With that said as a kid I remember it being pretty cool and fun to play. I think it gets a bad rap overall.

ОтветитьAt a yard sale in the 80s, my bought me a used 2600 and another Atari console, with a ton of games for each. E.T. was included. It is definitely NOT the worst game of all time. “Custer’s Revenge” is a ‘game’ where a cowboy’s goal is to have relations with a Native American Woman. That game I’ve never played but I’d say THAT is the worst game ever made.
ОтветитьIt's actually amazing he was able to program what he did in 5 weeks. To call E.T. the lone reason for the Crash of 1983 is ludicrous. For example, they printed 12 million Pac-Man cartridges...when they had only sold 10 million Atari 2600 consoles. This all points to bad businessmen, not developers.
ОтветитьI remember going to my moms when i was 7 (1993) and seeing ET and an Atari 2600 just sitting there. Tried it out and damn near lost my mind trying to get out of those craters. Granted, it ain't as bad as a Tiger handheld but this was the first game I ever remember hating.

ОтветитьI think I played this once but only for a few minutes. I thought Raiders kind of sucked too. It seems like we couldn’t figure out how to play some of these games so I guess we were probably just stupid 10 year olds. This isn’t the first time this sort of thing happened and we were getting kind of used to being disappointed.

Ответить5 weeks insane for an atari game, where even drawing a basic playfield is a challenge, on the ATARI, your code is constantly racing the CRT beam, with 3 pixels being drawn for ever cpu cycle, making game dev for the atari 2600 incredibly difficult and time-consuming
