You can have the part of the appendage that is facing the opposite direction from the smear stretch (while maintaining volume) during the apex of the smear, then gradually tone down the exaggeration as the body part eases in and stops. I feel like that's what makes them smooth, but that's just my opinion and there are many ways to create smears in 2d and 3d. Have a nice day.
