How To ● Turn Off a Leaking Water Heater

I tried all 3 methods suggested and it still leaks. I suspect the problem is in the shut off valve. It's not shutting off the water and is still flowing into the tank. Any suggestions?

I can sleep with a peace of mind till I call plumbers in the morning. I got scared because my friend said hers exploded. I turned off the panel, the water, ran the water line and it stopped leaking. Thank you

Great video! Can you please share any info regarding the cement-looking curb you have around your water heater? I think it's a great waterproofing solution and better than the small plastic/aluminum pans sold at box stores.

Sooo. I did the first step but I cant tell which one is the water valve.... do I still need to run the sink water on hot cause not hot waters been coming out for a week now. Those cold showers are something...😅

If you’d like to avoid draining all the hot lines in ur house u can leave the fixtures closed & open the relief valve to drain just the tank

So when I turn the water heaters water valve off, and I go to run the hot water water still comes for days. There is not end. I’m going to have to grab the hose. However why is it not slowing down like in the video after turning water off and running the hot water? Is it because it’s more badly damaged?

6 yrs later after you posted this and you saved a family and 4 dogs. Thank you so much. Was walking by the water heater closet and saw water and I opened the door to a misting spray from the outlet valve on top. Immediately looked for ways to turn it off and your video may have saved out lives. It that had blown up half my home would be gone and so would at least two of my four dogs. I believe the leak was only a day old. Calling landlord in the morning

Can you do the first few steps when you go on a vacation? Our water heater is almost due for replacement and it could break anytime soon.

when you cut the control panel to off, does that shut the gas off, or will the gas continue?

Hi! Thank you for this. My heater seems to be doing the same thing but it’s not leaking a lot of water, at least not constantly . After shutting it off, should I get it fixed or is this something that just needs to be shut off for a while and then turned back on again?

So there is no way to turn off the electric water heater? I can't see a way. I don't want to turn off electricity to whole house. It might be months before I replace the thing.

Have a gas water heater in my old home built in the 70s. Instead of the water main being where it us in every other house we had to punch a hole through the drywall to get to it, but otherwise this was all spot-on solutions.

It seems easy enough, but my water heater is turned around and I can't see the gas shut off valve.

Thank you! Water was gushing out of that hole that you attached the pipe to like I had opened a fire hydrant. Still don't know why. Of course, it's the holiday and my landlord isn't answering calls. I turned off both levers on the pipes and it stopped. You made me realize I needed to turn off the pilot light as well. Thank you thank you.

Mine has a blue plastic thing for lack of a better word and it was straight which on the blue thing means open so I turned it sideways and switched it to closed. Is that alright? Also when yoy turned the handle off it was turned to the right? Thanks for being straight to the point.
