Why's the index so terrible at in-game text?

Colors are extremely saturated in the Pico's view of flight (the clouds).

Problem is the Pico 4 will rarely look like that in sim racing. As soon as you start driving the road turns to one shade of grey due to the compression of the image. Compressed images are just not there yet for sim racing.

I have a Quest 2 and have previously also had the HP reverb G2. As others have said, its just like you see here. First i spection, clarify is fucking unbelievable in the center, truly amazing.. but it rapidly becomes absolute garbage just outside the sweet spot and becomes a blurry mess full of chromatic aberration. Quest 2 looks softer by co.parison, but the focus is better spread across the screen.

As I'm chosing headset right now for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, the sweetspot is kind of important. Should I go with the Pico 4 instead of G2 Pro Edition (Which my friend has)?

Pico is clearer and superior to index in every way sure finger tracking controllers are cool but there not worth it nether are the ugly base stations and the nasty price for an index if anyone reads this I’m in the only vr chat player who is anti valve index and believes valve should just give up on vr and go back to plaguing there games with bots instead of screwing the vr industry wireless is the future so the only way forward is stand alone and wirelesss don’t be a base station bitch be a stand alone pcvr and stand alone vr user freedom from cords is superior

The G2 is very blurry and the Index looks worse in every category, for the price a PICO 4 is a steal.

I picked up a Pico4 while I was in japan (exchange rate made it a STEAL in price~) I got to demo it first, and I gotta say I fell in love with the clarity... after doing pancake lenses and high resolution it's really hard to go back...

I have just ordered Pico 4. Can't wait to try them out!. I bought it over quest 2 for upgraded hw specs. Want best experience as this is my first VR headset. I have 1660ti graphic card/Ryzen 5. I hope it could run some pcvr games at decent quality.

Reverg g2 - the best. Pico 4 does not offer a DisplayPort. Actually the difference is huge , even with godlike mod and 3090 ti i can clearly see the compression and it is takes they immersions off.

the obvious conclusion I can see is the Pico 4 has the better overall image especially with text. It is sharper and more defined. The G2, while very good and close in comparison, seems to have a softer overall image especially when reading text. The Index has clearly shown it's age at this point and one cannot unsee the screen door anymore. How can someone in the US purchase the Pico 4? Can you provide any links to retailers for the Pico 4 ?

I really wish the Pico had a display port so that we could use it for PCVR without having to bottleneck through streaming via USB/wifi

I play PCVR only, and had the luck to have both the Pico 4 and G2 with me the last couple of days. I really wanted to keep the Pico 4, tried absolutely everything, from modifying config files from the streaming assistant, to doing the thetering USB trick and use Virtual Desktop in God Mode, it just doesn't look right to me, I rather have the occasional hiccups with the G2's tracking and not being able to look around with my eyes too much inside the headset than the compressed image and miliseconds delay via streaming with the Pico 4 or similar headsets.

Do you run them at 2160 x 2160 instead of 100% resolution? I found out a bit ago that while 100% resolution is higher than 2160 x 2160, it's that way because of the way the lenses distort the image displayed, thus having to super sample a bit to make up for that distortion. That is why when running my reverb g2 at 2160x2160, it says the resolution is set to 50%.

try the same with nreal air, please they have the highest ppd available, even though it's not a real vr headset, still might be interesting to compare

As much as the pico is praised here, since i prefer not to have my data harvested by bytedance, i rather stick with my reverb. From what i've heard also, you can mitigate the blurr a bit by cranking resolution up/supersampling over the base resolution. Requires adequate hardware though.

Is it just me or does the G2 have a much better contrast ration than the other 2?

The HP Reverb G2 shouldn't be in this list or any other because it only works for one or two months tops without presenting cable issues, also, HP Support is impossible to reach for this product. They simply don't want to honor the guaranty. Look in every VR forum and read some of the reviews before buy and HP product.

I bought Pico 4 and i'm very disapointed. I'm using Quest 2 from one month for PCVR with USB3 cable. I spent a lot of time to find out the best configuration (FPS and Quality). And now a lot of YT and internet hype for Pico 4 with Virtual Desktop (aka game changer and so on..) It's a bullshit for me. I've bought Pico 4 few days ago for better FOV, resolution and overall "image quality". Tested everything (WiFi6, USB-C etehernet card, USB3 cable, Streaming Assistant and Virtual Desktop (Godlike on my RTX 4090). Sorry, there is no way to have even close what i have on Quest 2 with OpenXR Toolkit and Open Composite with USB3 cable (I mean FPS and overall image quality not FOV of course). Now I will return my Pico 4, stay with Quest 2 and in the time where I wait for Quest 3 I will try HP Reverb G2 V2 because have also better spec then Q2 but can work same straight way like Q2 (OXRT, OC) without this sh**ty heavy SteamVR which Pico 4 use. Try your configuratiion with Virtual Desktop instead Streaming Assistant and You will see much better quality and performance, yes it's true. But again, for me even VD it's not to close what i've got from OXRT and OC. I wanted to have the same quality and performance on Pico 4, and even better due to the spec, but it's not possible until Pico 4 will not fully natively supports/uses Open XR.

Save money!! A lot of new VR headsets coming out in 2023.

People complain that the Index isn't oled but frankly the main reasons its shit and you shouldn't buy it isn't the display but the god-awful lenses that make you wonder how they could even justify selling the thing for half the cost they actually sold it at let alone at that rate. Not to mention everything about the device is so much more fragile than any of its competitors. Like paper mache.

Absence of a display port or a HDMI port on Pico 4 is a very big misfortune.

I own Index and Pico 4 (never tried Reverb). Hands down I like Pico 4 better. Pancake lenses, MUCH lighter and less clunky, and simpler to use. Index has, of course better controllers, but I'm tired of wires and tinkering.

Thanks a lot for this comparison, Tyriel, fantastic job! I‘ve bought Pico 4 after quest 2. I was disappointed about image clarity of pico 4 (I am playing only flight sims like msfs2020, dcs, xplane 12). Yes, resolution is higher, FOV either. But, image is darker therefore it seems not so sharp for my eyes. Indicators also look not so sharp, no benefit in front of quest 2, I had to move closer to the panel to see digits on some of indicators. By the way I connected glasses with PC via usb cable. It is way too buggy. So after this review I decided to return it to the seller. I don’t like messing around with it whereas quest 2 was working almost without problems just out of the box. So may be I will try hp reverb g2.

Poco 4 seems much sharper. A shame it has no internal support for Steam.

Standalone sucks, I'm not strapping a lithium battery to my head.. and you CAN'T change the battery out of the headsets ... and if you didn't know already, Lithium batteries have a shelf life whether you use it or not, all the Pico and quest garbage are is a glorified phone stuck in a crappy set of goggles.. NO THANK YOU!! and if you get sucked into the quest oculus garbage, just remember you are FORCED to link facebook account, and if for ANY reason you lose facebook account, you will lose EVERYTHING YOU PAID FOR in the oculus store.. no getting it back... FUK OCULUS AND FACEBOOK!!

I'm ready for a standalone with a high res oled screen and 90hz. Deep blacks are what make you forget reality and extend the fov to 210 degrees in dark games.

Getting my PICO 4 today replacing my rift S, only for PCVR use, but the pico is cheaper and I absolutely wanted the pancake lenses for foV and the 4k lenses
