Serious Sam is a series that has cool moments and ideas but such weird execution that it feels like it doesn’t want me to play it

Personally, I am quite glad we got this game for a few reasons. For one, it has grown on me over time quite a bit, that's better than it becoming more stale over time. Second is we got Siberian mayhem afterwards which was incredible even though it still suffers from a few of SS4's issues. The new enemy/weapon lineup for the most part is fantastic. And it's way less of a drag than SS3. (even though I love SS3 more because of the buckets of nostalgia for it.) And the humor did make me laugh a few times, usually it's rodriguez that does it. Him insisting he's not jealous about the rocket mod was hilarious XD. Overall I'm just glad that we got another SS game :) I just hope that the next part of Sam's journey is better and that development goes alot smoother.

So u boy are being serious making 4.5 hrs critical video about serious sam 4, right? Then I guess you got some brain issues, maybe cancer, because idk how on Earth you can hate Sam 4 after obnoxious Sam 3. Sam 4 has so many things fixed, and a few new ideas to the series. This is a great game, even though Serious Engine 4 is kinda weird, and some graphics and optimization issues do definitely exist. Btw, when it comes to Siberian Mayhem, I guess the game made by fans is nice too, and some stuff is even better than the original game. So, you call it a decay? After Sam 3? Dude, my condolences, your brain is severely damaged.

Dude the AK-74 is a real gun. It is, in fact, the Russian military's standard service rifle. It's an AK-47 chambered in a different cartridge with some slight alterations, basically. Named AK-74 because it entered service in 1974, its creation influenced by the Vietnam War and the introduction of the M16 during the Vietnam War.
So no, they didn't just switch the numbers around. They could have called it the AK-47 if they wanted to, there's no copyright laws to stop them. But they didn't, because it'd make more sense to find an AK-74 since that's what the Russian army uses.

on topic of the setting, I can't help but think of the original Far Cry when seeing how much space goes to waste in the maps for this game. that game was a perfect example of how to use map size while still keeping a clear sense of direction, and making interiors as detailed. and despite taking place in a modern day setting, Far Cry didn't shy away from throwing in a variety of locations, like military camps, laboratories, ancient ruins, it had the same sense of adventure throughout that Serious Sam 4 is missing. I mean, SS4 is set in 2113, how hard could it be to put at least some futuristic visuals into the mix?

Ok, so the whole "Sam from the future" thing. I know presently it does seem like a copout, but I can see a decent plot piece that can come out of this. Here comes a fanfic theory:

At some point, Sam, whether from after the Second Encounter or some other continuity, encounters Mental. He realizes that even he is not Serious enough to destroy Mental on his own, as it turns out that Mental really is in a way the One Infinite, spanning all kinds of dimensions and having tendrils in many, or all spacetimes.

Thus, Sam has to find a way to not just kill Mental, but annihilate its existence(s) across every dimension/time/space it lays upon. Sam must do all sorts of dimensional/portal/time travel, and he builds & hires a network of alternate timeline Sams and other operatives (like in here & in Siberian Mayhem). The Future Sam we see here might not even be the only manipulator here; he might be another part of this web of multidimensional operators working on the ultimate goal of annihilating Mental.

So, in this sense, one can canonize all Sam continuities. TFE/TSE, BFE, SS4, the Xbox port series (which I think SS2 is intended to be a sequel to), and all the other spinoff games could be part of a greater plan.

Parallel universes & time travel appearing honestly can sometimes feel copout-ish to me but when we have what we have I think it contextually would fit here.

Breakfast in France was the level they could have added a secret Alien Dragon boss if you went somewhere far away.
Heck even in Pompei when the volcano erupted they could have added there a Vulcanic Fire Dragon or a Balrog. Such a wasted potential.

The move from interesting surreal level design to weird photo realistic locations is a major killer of what made the series fun. The best part of this video is dissecting the game's technical bits and problems, rather than it being a weird walkthrough, It's a shame that the general view of this has become completely positive, considering the weird precedent it sets for Sam games.

Really late to this, but a few things:

-The oilrig level itself was butchered (or corrected, depending on how you look at that), according to Noam it used to be "alot" more of that interior area, you can even find left overs of this when looking at the map in the editor.
-Croteam has a strong Secrecy due to them enforcing NDA's on everyone who tests their games since TFE HD, because ZebAceGamer originally leaked the beta of TFE HD, and since Croteam didn't want any more leaks without legal backup.
-The 128K squared maps are infact, using data from NASA themselves, yeah I'm not kidding. They really went way further on that system than they should have (I should mention I did drive the bike to the edge of the map too!)

And finally, my problem with SS4 is... ask yourself this:
If you removed this game from the line up, would it even make a difference, universe wise? I don't think it would, to me, SS4 kinda feels... "unofficial", and nothing that happens in that game truely matters.

Great Video, glad there's still some people who remember long-forgotten history on this series.

Pretty good review! But i think main problem,as u was saying,is small team trying go yolo). If they just make smaller, more focused levels - graphics not be a issue. The game is too big for them to test and produce with such small team.Serious Sam 4 for me is better than 3,but if Croteam want to keep series moving forward they need a bigger team or do smaller games.Look at Talos! It was much smaller and simplier project.Looks good, plays good, have very nice plot, much more focused on where game goes, can be realistic. This proves that Croteam can make polished game, but it needs to be smaller in scope and more grounded.English is not my first language, hope i dont make many mistakes :)
