What is a double up wave, and what is a clearing set?

Nathan: Read the ocean better and maybe stay inside.
Also Nathan: Narrowly escaping massive third reef cleanup sets where mere mortals are saying prayers to the reef gods and counting time til they get washed to shore haha.

This is a gem of a video, for novice to pro. The enemy is “panic,” right? And the tools to defeat panic are knowledge, physical endurance and Zen-like composure. Easy to say onshore but every word and observation in your post is capable being life-saving. At 70 I don’t charge big stuff anymore, but at 70, 6 foot is the new 12 foot! Nathan—Thank you for providing such invaluable lessons for watermankind!

That amount of paddling, is insane, for those who never surfed it is extremely hard to paddle for so long. The scariest part is getting tired and having no ability to rest while being pounded crashing waves

"keep an open shoulder" is a surf ethic to live by. Why isn't that as common as 'don't drop in'??? ALWAYS eat some whitewater so people can have their shoulder! Only total knobs casually paddle over shoulders with a 'don't hit me' attitude. Mahalo nui loa NF, surfing ethicist
