On the subject of importance of personal and private (especially sexual) mater in the public discourse.
IMAO he idea that of jugding your leader by the hightest standard is no only hypocical (as we are all human) but very flawed.

First you place your own expectation of a private life you know very little about.
In this instance maybe Valery had her own affair, or both knew their love had ended and talked about it.
Or she was being a bitch and he decided he did not wanted to be the only making effort in their couple. Or he was the real dick cheating like that. The truth is we don't know.
They were not married after all, if they had been it might had been a slightly bigger deal , but in the end it's their bussiness not ours.

Cause it is private, it does not concern me, you or any of the public because it's their own sentiment and emotions about it each other and it deserve better than being flaunted in front of ervery one like some publicity (be it hate or love). Why ? Because then those emotion becomes political tool and it invites just more dishonesty and useless drama in politics (and precious media focus) on a subject that in the end does not matter on the political spectrum.

Publiciting private lives of public figures only create a climate of lies (hello mister clinton) where false immaculate private behavior is flaunted to the public and a public craving private scandals more than thinking about policies.
So by fear of public blowback you have individuals that are more unhappy in their personnal lifes in order to conserve their public persona, and thus creating more frustated and angry leader than necessary (hello Miss Clinton).
Plus this higher standard that is always standard only seems to create a more and more incensitive public to scandal, thus putting more scrutiny on private life, thus more stress on those public figures until one of them breaks (hello lady Diana). Or the Highest office becomes a matter of symboles only (hello Queen Elizabeth) or a reality show (hello mister Trump). It remove from office those who make honest mistake in their private life and trully regrets it and let the great liars continue to prosper.

I always found the use of the family as a political tool in the USA uterly disgusting. Not only kids and partner of a politican end up being sucked into "the game". But it also means that an non traditional politician as no choice but to run as it. Does a homesexual or Trans does not have the right to run as a citizen and not just the "homosexual candidat" label. In the US it seems impossible. You either thow it in the face of everyone (no choice) or you do not run period.
I think as long as anglo saxon politics does not stop focusing on private sexual lifes (and matter) it will never stop falling into hysterical frenzy as the media feed the craving public, create unstable politician and climate for LGBT people.
