Brings tears to my eyes every single time. It shows myself how grateful I truly am for the Savior and the Atonement.

I remember being shown this in seminary when I was in high school. I occasionally come back to watch it and it regularly fills my eyes with tears. I'm so grateful for Jesus Christ and his Atonement for us.

"What I shall say I could say much better if we were alone, just the two of us. It would be easier also if we had come to know one another, and had that kind of trust which makes it possible to talk of serious, even sacred things. If we were that close, because of the nature of what I shall say, I would study you carefully as I spoke. If there should be the slightest disinterest or distraction, the subject would quickly be changed to more ordinary things." I've always loved this intro to the parable.

Mormons are capitalist realists. This video is proof of that. It is a "we should feel bad for capitalists who don't do labor" story.

Packer describes a capitalist interaction to define a conundrum that can only be solved by Jesus. The moral of the story is to not go into debt to get what you need or what you want for instant gratification. And to pay attention to who your creditor is. Anybody who is in ongoing debt is just lazy and deserves to go to hell. God loaned us our lives and bodies and we fucked it up and didn’t work hard enough to pay him back. So now we must go to hell. Anything other than that would be unfair to god because he didn’t get his money back. The idea of prison existing is eternal and unchanging. Prison abolition is just unfair to all the people whose contracts were violated. The only solution is for a capitalist, someone with capital, to arrive. Jesus arrives with his preexisting wealth and says “don’t worry, I gotchu but now you’re going to have to pay hella interest.” So now we have to work even harder because we got pay back our original debt to God while also paying back this new debt to Jesus with the interest. Packer views god as a self interested person who needs to represent himself and demand we go to hell. God wouldn’t have let us come to earth if he knew we’d be so evil once we got here. Satan is just anything that destracts you from working hard to pay back the debt.

I think I read in one of the comments that asked: "So you mean you have to repay Jesus Christ now?" NO. You can NEVER repay Jesus Christ no matter what you do. But now, Jesus sets the terms and conditions like faith, repentance, etc.

I never liked this analogy. Guy wants a farm, gets lured into a predatory loan scheme, can't pay so creditor seizes his farm. The Lord pays the debt (to whom? Is God the loan shark, or does Jesus buy off Satan?) The concept of religious debt was explored by David Graeber in "Debt: a 5,000 year history." The Lord's atonement doesn't work this way, and most of history concerns predatory loan practices that trapped people in debt peonage. To present the atonement in a depiction that belittles the farmer and validates the loan shark...geesh

So God is the collector. He wants a full payment so that justice will be served.

Children of God are all sinners, therefore
God requires a mediator and that is Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ had to suffer, bleed and die so that justice will be served.

Romans 4:4,5. If you are trying to pay back the creditor (Jesus) you will never be able to pay it back, your not trusting in Jesus who is the Savior, not the helper; after all he is the one who proclaimed while hanging on the cross “it is finished”, meaning paid in full!

Jesus Christ is El Goel or Redeemer. He is our Savior. His Gospel or message of Salvation from the grasp of death are his terms of the Eternal covenant of salvation for children of Heavenly Father.
