Hi John , love your walking ways, my family are from Hackney and Leytonstone now I dwell in Canada, so your trips are a delightful ramble along memory lane, best wishes mate. ❤
ОтветитьMr. Rogers let me from the outset say that I believe London is the greatest city. No other city comes close to it.
Your channel brings me close to London. It's almost like I am there in body.
Thank you so much for your channel.
John Rogers and Chris Haugen , like two friends you can always rely on.
ОтветитьAs a kid I did the Regents canal to LImehouse when the old ship lock was still there, in a pair of traditional narrowboats. And from there up the Thames all the way to Oxford
ОтветитьAnother great walk from Limehouse is up the Lea River
ОтветитьI thoroughly enjoyed this tour, John! I used to frequent this area many a time, before I moved out to Hertfordshire (Watford). I will endeavour to retrace your steps one day in the summer. ❤
ОтветитьSorry i am a bit late but another great walk John
ОтветитьReally enjoyed this. Thank you John!
ОтветитьExcellent video my man
ОтветитьBlimey, watching this excellent - as usual - video has made me terribly nostalgic for home, East London. I used to live in the western block of Robin Hood Gardens in Poplar, a fine brutalist block that is no longer there, and the London Marathon used to pass by one end of it by Poplar High Street, so I’m very familiar with the Regents canal.
ОтветитьOne of your best. Very enjoyable.
ОтветитьWe did it this week, Friday. It has changed immeasurably since we did it last time, 10 years ago. So many aggressive cyclists and insane joggers made it more stressful than it needed to be. With all the new builds I can’t see that improving much.
ОтветитьGood stuff 👍🏻 I guessed 1967 for the last commercial traffic. Its a shame to see the mindless graffiti everywhere.
Ответитьthat was epic John. the fact that little bits of this canal evoke many memories at points in your life and I imagine most people who have lived in London at one time or another but to walk the whole length joins up the dots. I once joined at Paddington and cycled all the ay to Ealing / Alfeton - it was most boring going westwrds, but have had so many little strolls with ex partners along the old ford section, and to Limehouse, lunch in that cafe over the Maida Vale tunnel, jogging along the kings cross section under Cali road, and spending boozy mornings after leaving the Bagley's night club in Kings Cross goods yard at 6am and heading to Camden lock in the sun armed with beers from the local Sainsburys to sit for the entire next day, and sitting at my best friends flat in Gainsborough Studios bbqing on the balcony watching the hoards of hipsters commuting from Haggerston to Hoxton.... what a fantastic piece of infrastructure for stringing London together
ОтветитьHi John, A superb and very informative video as always. Many thanks for sharing, have a great week!!!
ОтветитьBrilliant video, John. Thank you. Greetings from Bodmin Moor - the remote bit!
ОтветитьThe modern silver houses in Camden were designed by Nicolas Grimshaw and are now Grade II listed. The monkey enclosure at the zoo was originally designed as an aviary and is also listed.
ОтветитьI am sickened by the graffiti. Such a wonderful canal cheapened by the mindless scrawl all around it.
ОтветитьThanks for another wonderful walk!
ОтветитьReally wonderful walk.
ОтветитьJust thought I would ask if anybody is put off walking outdoors at the moment due to the recent dog attacks highlighted in the press. I must say it has stopped me enjoying my daily walks as we have had things happen on our local park which is so sad it makes me feel more isolated and frustrated with society that I'm afraid to go out in my local area. 😢 it does not help with mental or physical well-being and I understand others may be feeling the same. What else can I say but roll my eyes to the heavens I would not make a political statement but it's come to something when a lady feels afraid to walk. 😢
ОтветитьGreat video thanks 😊xxxx
Ответитьwe live in N7 and work in Angel & paddington. The section closed off is a dissapointment & a true nuissance for me walking to work. Another example of the english obsession with private land, something you don't find enforced so strictly in other countries.
Great videos.
Hi John, thanks again for a great video.
Cd u pls add a link to yr music tracks?
If you have time.
Cheers,
Matt Gauranga.
I really enjoy your videos! Keep up the great work, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next.👍👍
ОтветитьSlowly being infested with nothing but rich kids,
In boats with the poor and working classes being erased. Observe swans for any amount of time and its not hard to realise why they're associated with royalty. Greedy and murderous. Be moor-hen.
John I see You did not find Your Red Hat.
ОтветитьSuch a beautiful walk befouled by the most disgusting graffiti everywhere!!!
ОтветитьThank you for doing one of my favourite walks ever. I’ve enjoyed it so much! ❤
ОтветитьIn answer to your question how many bridges I noticed in one of the first shots that the bridge in Limehouse has the figure 64 on it. Later I saw 48 on another bridge so I am guessing your answer lies in the number on the last bridge at Paddington. I used to live by this canal in Islington and can say that from my firends house on Arlington Avenue we saw commercial barges in 1956 - 1959 period. Don't think ours were horse drawn though.
The Manze shop you showed is not it's original location. It used to be on the corner of Chaple Market (Street) and Northwest Place. Also the saying to "leg it" comes from the barging community in respect of legging the barge throuh tunnels.
It's very pleasing to hear you pronounce Marylebone that way, John. I refuse to call it Marlee-bone.
And, equally contentious; this video is a beautiful homage to the graffiti of London.
We were just there, off Primrose hill, a few months ago. Thank you for the wonderful vlog…
ОтветитьBRILLIANT .... cheers from Newquay John.
Ответитьfor the second time, i need to go back and re-watch all over your videos, john - see you on the other side 😊
ОтветитьThat was a fantastic walk! I used to cycle along the canal from Little Venice to Camden quite often (and boat there along with a friend who lived on a narrow boat and take his canoe out along there) and that section brought back great memories. You'd scarcely believe it but the land around Paddington basin was empty and windblown then (but it was thirty years ago)
ОтветитьGreat walk - if you are interested in the movement of troops by canal look into Weedon Bec armaments near Northampton. The plan was if Napoleon invaded that Northampton would become the temporary capital and all the barracks and buildings for the army were put at nearby Weedon Bec linked by the Grand Union which actually ran into the barracks and are still there - although no longer linked up - and you can visit. It was never used at the time but was used during WW1 & 2 for army storage.
ОтветитьWalking on the shore,❤really lovable, really excellent and nice walk, everythings look like picture images ,Jacob on the boat sometimes its feel peaceful ✌, after pandemic everywhere poverty is taking place, you show us canal,River and locks and boats and cruises sometimes its feel mysterious ❤riverside flat construction is very beautiful I think it will be very nice to see it in evening time, everything is like fairy tale ❤😊from past 100 -200 years it seems very popular Port love ❤ this walk Heidi Ma'am is always right ✅ please listen to him 😀 thanks 💖 for a wonderful journey 😊 swan is floating 😀 very beautifully London Great Britain 🇬🇧 amazing ❤london is always in my dream ❤love this country so much ❤😊And yes meadows song of your father🎵 is so so good like listening childhood stories memorable 😀 😊 ❤
ОтветитьI think the gasometers at Kings Cross used to be near the junction of Goods Way and Pancras Road, where Pancras Square is now. Interesting you say that it was proposed to build a railway along the route of the Regents Canal, a fate that befell the Croydon Canal, of which only a small section and a reservoir remain. Maybe worth featuring its former route as a walk video? Or maybe linking sections of The Great North Wood? Both ideal south London walks!
ОтветитьMy neighbours used to run that cafe over the canal. Cafe La Ville. They built the balcony
ОтветитьAw, that family of geese on the straw - put out for them by the residents of those posh flats? I'm always on the fence about these interventions in the natural lives of wild animals. They don't actually need us to make nests for them. How much of this might confuse them or even interfere with their natural behaviour?
ОтветитьYou’ve really taken me down memory lane on this one. From Islington, where I was born and grew up, through Camden and Regents Park where I spent so many days and nights having fun in my teens and twenties - to Merchant Square, where I once used to work and would often get coffee from the places there. This is also in my top ten John Rogers walks now!
ОтветитьLove the haircut John. That must feel good.
ОтветитьGreat video - Thks for sharing
ОтветитьWalked the section from Coal Drops Yard to Regents Park a few years ago in the February, still busy with the public even on a cold sunny week day.I have a keen eye for the layers of architecture both industrial and housing, as you say some of the Regency mansion houses are superb especially with rounded turrets. 👍
ОтветитьWow!Wonderful!
ОтветитьHi John have you thought about doing a walk on the river wid nr chelmsford could be a interesting walk especially butt's bury wash.
ОтветитьGreat vlogg John..
ОтветитьWas the shark still there?
