If the focal length created "compression", it would be really hard to work with the camera, if it would work at all. Compression, or perspective, is the same for all focal lengths at the same distance to subject. Only the cropping changes. You wouldn't want the camera to drag your animation elements around in 3D space depending on focal lenght. What you did was to pull your camera back to fix the gaps and a longer focal lenght cleans up the cropping.
