Orange peel is fine, when the whole car has it, but something has to be done when the car is part painted and has a load of it

Smart talk but its just one of those “piano CAN fall on you head tomorrow and YOU could die” sort of talks. Most likely nothing will happen to a car with corrected peel but yah what if you are unlucky

Just get extra clear coat put down so you can sand and polish. I'm talking about the average Joe's car. Not a show car. And people, your car is an average car, I don't care if it has custom wheels and speed stickers lol

A rough base isn’t the only way that orange peel is created. Clear that wasn’t reduced enough, baked too quickly or sprayed too cold will also cause orange and that’s just at the clear coat level. Wet sanding and buffing is always part of a show quality paint job so let’s not act like it’s an obsolete option. You can also level clear with denim pads and polish without removing much of any clear. There’s a time and a place and it offers amazing results, cheers.

Hey Todd, I painted the hood of my car with spray paint in a can and finished it with a 2K clear coat also from a can. I did put around 3 coats of clear coat and now I would like to fix the orange peel. Is it safe with 3 coats to fix the orange peel?

If orange peel levelled and followed up with a ceramic coating should that negate concerns of UV inhibitors being diminished in the foreseeable future?

I tried to get rid of orange peel last year on my truck but I would of been better off not trying to get rid of the orange peel. Just gonna paint my truck again this year. I saw multiple videos of people trying to get rid of orange peel but also was trying to do it on metallics so I was sanding away the metallics on it too.

If you check out "kds Keltec" He shows that through the correct techniques wet sanding to remove orange peel actually removes very little clear coat, around 4-6 microns! This is less than say a heavy cut compound, he has wetsanded many cars including a Ferrari Enzo and his knowledge is unrivalled.

Question please! I'm desperate. I just had a scratch repair that required repainting my entire upper rear bumper on my black C7 Z06. I also so did ceramic coating and they told me xpel ppf to match work already done from the previous owner. I'm seeing what looks like bad orange peel. But what's strange is I don't see it in direct light and I can't get it to really come out in a camera. I see it an indirect light especially let's say in my garage just out of the Sun. I read xpel could add a slight Orange Peel effect. I don't know if this is normal, a poor paint job, or paint correction was not performed after the paint job, or perhaps the xpel or a combination but I could really use some advice if you're able

I don't know what everyone's trip is with orange peel. I happen to like it vs the slick look. Paint looks thicker and more uniform. I had a wreck in my truck back in 2000 and when I got it back the paint was slick as hell and didn't match the factory paint. I made them redo it.

That's why I use a very high solids clear and put an extra coat. I've done it for years and have work that's been looking beautiful for 20 yrs. actually some of them are over 20 yrs. If you're talking about trying to cut and buff factory....oh yeah I agree then.

Thank you for the valuable input, i have a 2021 Subaru Outback turbo and it came with orange peel 🍊. I was wondering if i should polish before applying ceramic/graphene coating then wax. This answered that 💯 % NO... i will just; wash with striping soap, iron remover, clay bar, apply coat of Turtle Wax Pro Graphene Flex spray, wait 24 hours, apply second coat, wait again, apply the wax version. To me its not “just” a Subaru, he deserves it. Hope I’m not missing anything, if so there is next time. 😊

Agree on NEW cars, but.. When REPAINTING a car you want to be perfect, have multiple layers of clear coat on. Not the usual amount but double or triple. After polishing, a much thicker layer remains which equals or surpasses the UV protection level of a factory paint. It will eventualy leave enough clear lacker on to remove future scratches as well.

What about wet sanding if you go over with a real high quality ceramic coating like Gtechniq Ultra? Should that keep the paint lasting for a long time after a somewhat mild wet sand job? For instance maybe just knock the orange peel back some with 2500 or 3000 grit wet sand?

Planning to ceramic coat my car, still a bad idea? I figured with the UV inhibitors and hardness of the coating it would be safe. Trying to make the paint as defect free before locking it in with a 4 year coating. The car was resprayed so it has some pretty bad orange peel in some areas.

Modern factory clears are so crappy (and ridiculously thin) they'll be dead within ten years anyhow.....If your customer wants the paint on his $73,000+ Vette look better than a Chevy Spark I'd tell him to have the factory Orange peal sanded out and re-clear the car with House of Color Kosmic Urethane Show Klear. Then he'll have a paint job that will last decades and not look like S.

THANK GOD someone expresses the dangers in correcting orange peel. Overall it is just a very big liability and compromising the integrity of the clear coat. There are clients that get mad about your answer being no but they do not understand unless you explain it. Also with paint correction, there is but so many times you can do that before you start to really thin out the clear coat and you have some clients that think it's suppose to be a yearly thing from their improper washing techniques or taking the finish through auto wash. Thanks for the video, i am able to rest now lol

This is why Koenigsegg use about 3 times more clear coat so that they can sand and polish the paint until everything is perfect and still have more than enough clear coat to protect that expensive paintjob.

Orange peel is caused by too much lacquer/clear coat (from the factory) isn’t it? My bmw e90 has it on the doors & wings.

Do you think adding additional clear coat, waiting for it to cure over 30-days or so and then going in and leveling it out is a good idea or do you think to not even worry about it unless I plan on repainting the car?

You shouldn't remove orange peel, yes. You can however mask it completely by having a clear filler paint job.

When done safely it is only taking the peaks off the orange peel texture . Thus leveling it.
