I really wish someone told me about this a long time ago. There’s a concept called habit stacking.

Developing a completely new behavior or habit can be really difficult, especially if you have nothing to anchor this new behavior to. With habit stacking, essentially when you, or say someone you are supporting, like an employee, is trying to develop a new behavior or habit, you attach that new habit to an already existing behavior. That’s why the concept of brushing your teeth in America worked well because marketers attached the habit to going to bed and after eating breakfast.

Say you want to create a habit of saying hello to coworkers or your team in the morning. You already have a routine of every day going to the break room in the morning for coffee, attach this new habit to that habit of getting coffee. The point is don’t just try to build a stand alone habit on it’s own, attach it to something you already have formed and you or your staff will be way more likely to turn this into a routine.
